Day 5: Temple Run in Bangkok

It is really nice to travel with your family but I admit there are times that it is a challenge to travel with a kid in tow. Especially now that my son is in tweenage years, he has his own likes, wants and mind so when I was planning for our Bangkok Itinerary, he immediately said “I don’t like temples ha”. What?

Read: Why Do We Travel with Kid in Tow

Of course, I will not waste my opportunity to visit at least one temple in Bangkok so I asked other mommy bloggers for their suggestions and then I chose Wat Pho. I was contemplating if I will just book at Klook, With Locals, Hotel Tours or DIY. I mentioned before that I’m not confident in commuting and I’ve read that there are scammers at the temples so I wanted to book a package tour but in the end, I still chose DIY tour. Why? Because it is cheaper and I can explore the temples on my own time.

On our day 5, off we went to the temples. We’ve seen the temples on our first night in Bangkok. I availed Chao Phraya Princess Dinner River Cruise but of course, I want to see the temples up close. Going there is not a problem because the direction is almost the same except that we will not ride a taxi anymore.

How to Get to Chao Phraya River

From our hotel, we rode at BTS Skytrain Asok Station to BTS Saphan Taksin Station

Travel to Siam Station using BTS - Sukhumvit Line (4 stations)
Travel to Saphan Taksin using BTS -Silom Line (6 stations)
Then go to Exit 2 and follow the signs to Chao Phraya River Express Boat.
Purchase ticket a Hop On-Hop off ticket or Single Journey Ticket.

Train: THB44/person
Chao Phraya Tourist Boat:
THB50/person - Single Journey Ticket
THB180/person - One Day River Pass

You can choose the regular boat but I chose the Chao Phraya River Boat for convenience. This boat will only stop at Tourist Spots like Shopping Mall, China Town, Flower Market, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, Wat Pra Kaew and Khao San Road.

The boat leaves at Sathorn and Phra Arthit every 30 minutes
Sathorn 9:00 to 17:30
Phra Arthit 9:30 to 16:00

Boat extend their routes to Asiatique
Phra Arthit 16:00 to 18:00
Sathorn 16:30 to 18:30

There is already a booth of Chao Phraya River Boat at the train station so I purchased a ticket there and when I reached Pier, the staff get my ticket and replaced with a map and printed receipt. Then we waited for the boat with Blue Flag.

My initial plan was to visit Wat Pho but the boat stopped at Wat Arun (N8 - Tha Thien). Since I only wanted to visit one temple, I did not purchase a ticket anymore so we just enjoy the beauty of the temple outside. Wat Arun or also known as Temple of the Dawn is a stunning temple in Bangkok because of the design and location. Check my Chao Phraya River Cruise post so you can see the beauty of this temple at night.

Wat Arun or Wat Chaeng
Opening Hours 8AM to 17:30
Ticket: THB50

Then we took a small shuttle boat to cross the river so we can visit Wat Pho on the opposite side. We paid THB4/person for the boat. Afterward, we walked to the temples, we just followed the crowd. Hehehe! I’m thankful that my son is still FREE, you can hire a tour guide if you want for THB200-400 depending on the number of persons.

Wat Pho or Wat Phra Chetuphon is also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. We did not waste our time, we immediately looked for the famous 15 meters tall and 46 meters long Buddha. You need to take off your shoes before you enter, don’t worry there is a ready plastic bag there where you can put your shoes. Taking a picture is hard because there are a lot of tourists. If you want some luck, donate THB20 for a bowl of coins and drop in 108 bronze bowls. Dito lang nag-enjoy anak ko sa paghulog ng coins, the rest of the day “sad face” maski sa picture. Lol This temple is also known for traditional massage and medicine so you can try that.

As much as I want to explore the whole Wat Pho temple, my son was complaining already. Ayaw na nga maglakad. So I have no choice but to end our temple tours. Sayang nga, the Grand Palace is 10 minutes away lang daw, hindi ko man lang nakita kahit sa entrance lang. We rode the small shuttle boat again so we can ride the Chao Phraya Tourist Boat at the Wat Arun side.

Watch the video here.

Wat Pho
Opening Hours: 8:00 to 17:00
Entrance Fee: THB100 with free bottled water.

Tip: Don’t forget to bring drinks, fan, cap or extra clothes. Sa init dun, maliligo ka sa pawis. Of course, wear appropriate clothes. They say that there are tourist scammers at the temple but we did not encounter any or dahil diretso lang lakad namin. But of course, beware of scammers.

I did not regret that I chose DIY Tour. Going to the temples is not that hard, all you need to know is where are you going to buy the riverboat ticket and what station are you getting off. Once you get off the boat, just walk to the Temple, pay the entrance fee and explore.

Day 4: Jim Thompson House & Museum

On our fourth day in Bangkok, I was not in the mood to go out because our phone was locked. If you’ve read my Kidzania Post, my son changed the password and can’t remember it so we can’t access the phone where we put our Thailand Sim Card. Since it was our first time in BKK (son and I), I’m not that confident in commuting.

But I still pushed myself to go out at sayang naman ang araw kung tatambay lang kami ng hotel. I just check my itinerary and chose Jim Thompson House & Museum, siguro naman hindi kami maliligaw dito. We’re supposed to visit this after Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World, since it is just one train away from Siam Station but we’re tired already.

How to Get to Jim Thompson House & Museum

From our hotel, we rode BTS Skytrain, from Asok Station to Siam Station (4 stations) then we transferred to Silom Line to National Stadium Station (1 station). Take Exit 2 and go straight to Soi Kasemsan 2 and look for Jim Thompson’s House Museum. It is a long walk from the train station.

It was raining on our way to the museum but we’re thankful that the rain stopped when we reached the National Stadium Station. This museum is not free, you need to pay THB150 per person. Good thing that my 9 years old son is still FREE. The staff asked for my son’s age and our home country, then she gave me the flyer and receipt where the time of tour was written.

So we still have enough time to tour the place while waiting for our tour guide. I saw this woman getting silk from the silkworm cocoons. The cocoons are placed in boiling water and there is a spinning reel where fibers are extracted and fed. There is souvenir shop where they sell products made from silk. I did not buy anything because it is too expensive for my budget.

Jim Thompson House & Museum

Jim Thompson House & Museum is a home of an American who was born in Delaware but fell in love with Thailand. He was sent to Bangkok for a short military service but he decided to return and live permanently. He is a gifted designer and textile colorist so he has a big contribution and part of the Thai’s silk growth.

His house represented the best in traditional Thai architecture. He opened his home to the public and all proceeds donated to Thai charities and projects to preserve Thailand’s rich cultural heritage. This house and museum remain as his lasting reminder after he disappeared last March 26, 1967, in Cameron Highlands in Malaysia.

You will learn more about this house once you visited the place. The tour guide is knowledgeable enough to explain everything. You cannot take pictures inside the house but you are free to take pictures outside. There is a storage area where you need to keep your bag and put your shoes before entering the house.

Watch the video here.

It was a short visit but it is nice to know more about the Thailand History. There is a restaurant too but I decided to eat at MBK Center so we can have more options. They have a complimentary tuk-tuk ride to train station and we took advantage of that. Yey, for free TukTuk Ride.

Ticket: 150 Baht
Opening Hours: 9AM to 6PM

5 Tips For Traveling While Drinking Alcoholic Beverages

Traveling is a great way to experience new places, foods, products and of course, drinks. Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, alcohol can add to your traveling experience. Of course, it should not be the primary focus of the destination. However, depending on where you go in the world, there are many types of drinks to enjoy. This can create new memories and enhance your overall experience. In order to strike the right balance of alcohol consumption, consider the tips below while traveling and drinking. It can make your travels a better experience overall.

Stay At Hotels With Free Happy Hours

If you enjoy a free drink once in awhile, stay at a hotel that offers free happy hours. Some hotels will actually roll out some free alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages for their guests. These types of hotels that offer free happy hours tend to offer it to all guests or premium members who have rewards. This is a fun way to meet other people staying at the same hotel as well as get a free drink. Whether you just want to have a wine or a beer, happy hours are a great time to sit back and unwind after a long day of traveling. This is a nice perk to look for when booking your stays during your vacations.

Take Alcohol On Your Flight

Despite contrary belief, travelers can take alcohol aboard flights. You simply have to adhere to the strict rules set forth by the TSA. You cannot have liquids in containers that are more than 100 ml (or approximately 3 oz). Then, all of those containers need to fit into a 1 qt Ziploc bag. Once you stick to these rules, you can buy very small alcoholic beverages in 50 ml bottles. This allows you to bring some of your own alcohol on the flight. Of course, this could vary from airline to airline. But, it has worked for other frequent flyers and it could work for you too.

Have A Drink With Your Meals

Food scientists have found that drinking with your meals while traveling can lower the risk of getting sick. According to a report by The Sun, you could avoid getting food poisoning. Many travelers eat at restaurants and buffet stations. These environments could have food pathogens including salmonella, E. Coli, and others. However, alcoholic beverages like beer and wine have been shown to prevent these pathogens. Therefore, having a drink with your meal could keep your stomach healthier while traveling at all-inclusive locations or between multiple places.

Do Not Drink And Drive

While you are on vacation, the last thing you want to deal with is a criminal case for DUI. When you drink alcohol, your decision making can become impaired. In the US, as well as many other countries, drunk driving is legally enforced. As Daniel Noll, a Springfield DUI attorney at Noll-law.com, explains, “Being arrested for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) is a scary experience.” It could ruin your traveling experience. If you decided to drink, just make sure that you can order a cab or taxi to take you where you want to go. This will keep your travels safe and enjoyable.

Order Drinks That Add To Your Experience

While traveling, take advantage of the opportunity to drink local beers, wines, and cocktails. You can immerse yourself in a new culture by experiencing their food and drink pairs. Instead of ordering that favorite drink that you are used to, try something out of your comfort zone when you are sitting down to dinner. You can always go back to your normal routine when you get back home. While out in the world, open yourself up to new drink tastes, styles and orders. You might even find a new favorite drink to enjoy long after the trip is over.

When traveling, drink responsibly to enjoy your vacation. If you do this, you can have fun on your trips while going to free happy hours, taking drinks on your flight or pairing a nice drink with your meals. Above all, be respectful and kind to others if you are drinking. You do not want to be the loud or disruptive passenger on the plane. Moreover, you should never commit a DUI by drinking and driving. Keep yourself open while traveling and taste some new drinks. Following these tips, you will enjoy drinking alcohol while traveling because it will add to your experience overall.

Day 3: Kidzania Bangkok

Just like other theme parks, Kidzania has several branches around the world. During our third visit to Kidzania Manila, I’ve learned that there are 26 branches worldwide so I guess it is very impossible to visit them all before my son hits 15 years old. We’re supposed to visit Kidzania Japan and Kidzania Singapore during our past travels but we were not able to make it due to limited time. Of course, the entrance fee is not cheap so we want to allot one whole day.

Kidzania is an educational theme park where kids can experience how to work. My son loves visiting this theme park so when I learned that there is Kidzania in Bangkok, I immediately added this to our itinerary. The entrance fee is expensive compared to Kidzania Manila, good thing I got a discount at Klook. I purchased 1 Adult and 1 Child ticket for P2349 or $45.01.

Toddlers (2-3) P1150 to P833
Child (4-14) P1916 to P1433
Adult (15+) P1150 to P916

If you haven’t tried Klook, use this link to get discount on your first purchase. Unlike the Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World ticket, Kidzania Bangkok offers full refund if cancellations are made 24 hours prior to the activity.

If our trip falls on weekends, I would book those days because we can stay from 10:30 to 8:30. Mas sulit yung bayad namin sa ticket but unfortunately, we don’t have available weekends so I just booked a weekday trip from 10 - 5PM. Kidzania Bangkok is located inside Siam Paragon Shopping Mall so commuting is not a problem.

How to Get to Kidzania Bangkok

From our hotel, we just went to BTS Skytrain Asok Station and got off at BTS Siam Station (4 stations). Take Exit No. 5, walk to Siam Paragon Complex, and go straight to 5th floor. You won’t get lost because you can see the Air Asia Airplane outside.

Side story: I only have one picture during our Kidzania visit. Prior to our trip, my husband bought a phone so we could purchase a Sim card to save money. So I used that phone for our group picture and when my camera ran out of battery.

The following day, I wanted to save our pictures and videos but I couldn’t open the phone, only to find out that my son changed the password before he slept and he forgot the password. Waah! So my husband just resets the phone so all the pictures and videos were gone. Huhuhu! Good thing that I sent the photo to my husband to inform him that we arrived in Kidzania.

Moving on, upon arrival, I just showed my printed voucher and the staff gave us the map, check, and of course the wristband. What is nice about Kidzania Bangkok is you can go there any time because the staff can speak English, unlike in Kidzania Japan there is only one day for English. If I remember it right, every Wednesday lang yun. What I don’t like is they don’t have PAZZPORT, sayang yung stamps, and Kidzos discount. My son was able to do 19 Activities in one day so we were exhausted after our visit.

19 Activities in One Day at Kidzania Bangkok

1. Milk Factory
2. Peanut Factory
3. Bottling Plant
4. Green Tea Factory
5. Vault
6. Urban Tomato Farm
7. Eye Care Center
8. Ketchup Factory
9. Water Research Center
10. Colour Design Studio
11. C.S.I
12. Construction Site
13. Gas Station
14. Culinary School
15. Pilot Training Facility
16. Photo Studio
17. Hamburger Shop
18. Convenience Food Store
19. Car Design

Watch the video here

Since we’ve been to Kidzania Manila thrice, I told my son to try those activities that are not available in Manila. Of course, we went to establishments with free foods and drinks like the Milk Factory, Peanut Factory, Bottling Plant, Green Tea Factory, Water Research Center, Ketchup Factory, Culinary School and Hamburger Shop so we could save money. Hehehe!

My son worked at the Vault, he delivered and learned about money. He also worked the Urban Tomato Farm where he picked tomatoes and delivered it to Ketchup Factory. He also learned how to make a paint and designed a room at Colour Design Studio. If you want to get a Driver’s License, you need to pass an eye exam test first. We did not try this anymore but my son just worked at the Eye Care Center.

I like the Construction Site here because my son was able to operate a machine. My son went to Pilot Training Facility and he said, the experience is different from Manila I was able to see him too because there is a monitor outside. For Photo Studio, my son got an ID after the photography training. Other jobs that he tried are CSI, Gas Station, Convenience Store and Car Design.

There are shows too like Magic Show, Fashion Show, and Theater Show but we were not able to watch them because we were busy looking for work. Other attractions that you can visit are Madame Tussauds and Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World. Book your ticket here to get discount

If you have kids, zoos, ocean parks, theme parks are always part of the itinerary. So whenever we travel, there should always fun activity for kids. There are scheduled shows and fun talks that you can watch and some paid activities like 4D Cinema, Glass Bottom Ride, Animal Feeding, and Happy Fish pedicure.

The Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World entrance fee is not cheap so I was thankful that I discovered Klook website and I was able to purchase our ticket at a discounted price. How to Get to Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World

Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World is easily accessible by the BTS Skytrain. From the hotel, my son and I rode BTS Skytrain at Asok Station going to Siam Station, (BTS - Sukhumvit Line; 4 stations). From Siam Station, go to exit no. 5, enter the Siam Paragon mall and follow the signs. The aquarium is located at B1 & B2 of the mall.

I just presented my voucher and they gave me the physical ticket. They did not give me any flyers so don’t forget to ask for one when you enter the aquarium. If you have kids in tow, ask for the Dive Logbook. Your kids will look for 9 Dive stations and collect stamps. They have a reward after completing the task.

Though this is the largest aquarium in Southeast Asia, you only need two hours to explore the park. So make sure you check the scheduled of shows and feeding activities so you can plan your trip.
