No Brand; A Korean Grocery Store

No Brand is a Korean grocery store that started in year 2015 and it has over 200 branches in Korea. It opened its first store in the Philippines, way back on November 22, 2019 but since I live in the province, deadma lang ako sa news. Hehehe! I can buy Korean stuff in grocery and other Korean stores in our place.

But a few weeks ago, we went to Alabang Town Center and I saw No Brand store so I checked it. The branch here is not that big, sharing some pictures of the stuff that you can buy.

I did not buy a lot kasi kakagrocery lang din namin pero nabudol ako ng tea spoon and tea fork kahit marami naman ako ganito sa bahay. Kakaiba yung shape nung tea spoon kasi and mas mahaba yung handle, dinamay ko na yung tea fork para may kapartner. hehehe!

I also bought wipes, frying batter mix, and No Brand Potato Chip Original. Okay yung potato chips and mas mura compared sa Pringles. If ever may makita ko ulit na No Brand Store, I will buy the must-try food like Purple Sweet Potato Chip, Chocolate Chips, and other Korean snacks.

Our Holistay at The Sanctuary Batulao

We did not plan anything for our Christmas Break because we have so many “things to do” that we put off since we were so busy for the past ber months. But after our Christmas celebration, we decided to welcome 2023 in other places but obviously, it was too late for us to plan. Most of the resorts that my husband checked were already fully booked. Good thing, my husband is still on vacation and my son has no face-to-face class yet, so we were able to have a staycation after the holiday.

Last year, we were in Acuaverde Beach Resort so for a change, gusto namin sa cold places. Baguio is out of the option because it is too far and yung Tagaytay naman, lagi na kami doon. Upon searching, my husband discovered “The Sanctuary Batulao” which is just located in Nasugbu, Batangas so malapit and it is situated in a high place so malamig.

Unfortunately, it was fully booked on our preferred date but fortunately, dahil nagchange kami ng date, naavail namin yung New Year Promo (January 1-31, 2023) which is 40% off. Monday to Thurs, holidays and breakfast are not included.

The Sanctuary Batulao has 5 different villas which cater to couples, families, and big groups. Since we are a family of three, our options are Bahay Kubo and Bunker Room; we chose the Bahay Kubo because we prefer the location and it is much cheaper. The regular rate is PHP5,000 for two persons but because of the promo, we got it for PHP3,000 + VAT. Additional person is PHP1,000 + VAT, inclusive of extra bed and free breakfast.

My husband booked on their website but in order to confirm the reservation we need to pay the full amount within 48 hours after we received the pending booking confirmation via email. My husband paid the reservation via online bank transfer and sent the screenshot. It will take 1 to 2 business days daw to confirm. Based on our experience, matagal sila magconfirm ng payment.

Sat: husband booked on their website
Sun: paid and sent the proof of payment via email.
Tues: we received a reminder that we need to pay, even though we already paid.
Wed: we received our booking confirmation

Staycation at The Sanctuary Batulao

Since we live in the South Luzon area, Nasugbu, Batangas is not that far so we don’t need to leave early. We left before 12NN after eating our lunch and we arrived before 1:30PM. There is a PHP1,500 incidental fee that we need to pay upon check-in and they only accept cash so make sure you have enough cash for your stay. Checking in is easy but check-in time is still 2:30PM so we need to wait. While waiting, we explored the place and we just received a call informing us that our room is ready.

This is the Bahay Kubo. It has its own parking space and we have one Queen Bed, Toilet and Bath, Desk and Fridge. Since we are a group of 3 people, we requested for extra bed and towel. Sanctuary Batulao is not a resort so don’t forget to bring your own toiletries. They only provide towels and tissue rolls.

Bringing food is allowed but limited to snacks and desserts so for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, we ate at their restaurant. You can pre-book your meals so by the time you go to the restaurant, iseserve na lang nila yung meals niyo. Sharing some of the foods that we ate during our three days staycation.

For breakfast, here are the options: Tapa, Hotdog, Daing na Bangus, Cornbeef and Garlic Longganisa for PHP238. This includes egg, rice, and coffee or hot chocolate. Favorite namin yung Tapa, kakaiba version nila Roast Beef.

For lunch and dinner, we ordered Garlic Butter Tanigue PHP360, Grilled Liempo PHP420, Nilagang Baka PHP480, Soy Garlic Chicken Wings PHP385, Pinakbet PHP265, Lechon Kawali PHP540, Leche Flan PHP250, Cup of Rice PHP40, Soda PHP50 and Juice PHP60. favorite namin yung Garlic Butter Tanigue, Lechon Kawali and Grilled Liempo.

We enjoyed our food trip here, so kahit isa lang ang restaurant nila, hindi ka magugutom kasi marami dishes and masarap din. Medyo late lang start ng breakfast, 7:30AM and my son’s online classes start at 7AM so hindi siya makababa ng restaurant. I’m thankful na inallow naman nila dalhin namin yung breakfast meal ng anak ko sa room. We just returned the plate and utensils after.

There is nothing much to do in Sanctuary Batulao so if you are looking for activities, this place is not for you. There is only a swimming pool and ATV for rent, we were not able to experience ATV kasi not safe, dahil maulan during our stay. In addition, there is no television and no wifi but if you want to disconnect, I can recommend this place. Sabi nga nila, “Being offline is a new luxury”.

Hmmm, I guess it is a sign of aging na rin because despite that we did not do anything during our stay dahil maulan, we still enjoyed our holistay. All we wanted was to eat, relax and rest before we go back to reality.

“A vacation is having nothing to do and all day to do it". - Robert Orben

Notes:
*Even though there is no wifi, okay naman ang data signal so my son was able to attend online classes.
*Be careful sa swimming pool, slippery talaga.
*Downside ng Bahay Kubo, rinig mo talaga yung raindrops sa bubong.
*Good customer service din. Since maulan, the staff even went to our kubo to give us an umbrella so we can go to the restaurant.
*Upon check-out, they will check your room first before they will return the PHP1,500.

Highlights of Year 2022

I started the year 2023 at a snail’s pace. In fact, I spent my first day of the year reflecting on what happened in the year 2022 and I realized that 2022 is indeed the best year for us. I am so grateful to God for turning our tears into joy.

“Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.” John 16:20

Since 2018, we faced so many challenges and heartaches. We lost 7 family members from 2018 to 2021 and I could not describe in words how painful it was. Aside from that, we were physically, emotionally, and financially stressed because of hospital and funeral expenses. But I am thankful for God’s provision and strength in these challenging times.

And because of what happened over the past few years, there are times that I felt nervous and scared as I welcome the brand new year. I am so paranoid na baka may magkasakit na naman or baka may mawala na naman.

So when the year 2022 came, I don’t have any plans and I don’t know exactly where I’m headed, but of course, I am excited to begin my journey. I just try to live my life one day at a time and enjoy the present because I know that the future is uncertain.

“Never let the sadness of your past and the fear of your future ruin the happiness of your present”

Why 2022 is the best year?

1. Even though we and our family got sick, it is not something serious so nakahinga na kami sa hospital expenses.
2. After losing some family members in the past, mafifeel mo sa reunions or special occasions na pakonti na ng pakonti kami but I’m thankful we are complete in year 2022.
3. Year 2022 is the year when I was able to spend more time with my mom. We were not able to see her for the longest time because of COVID-19 but last year, we had the opportunity to stay in Norway for 3 months and my mom also had a vacation in the Philippines for almost 3 months. Ito na yung pinakamatagal na nakasama ko mother ko since I was six year old.
4. I was able to spend time with my friends. Hindi na virtual get-together.
5. I am so happy that we can eat out, pwede na kasi ang bata sa restaurant. Ang tagal din namin hindi nakapagfood trip kasi hindi pwede bata before. And because of this, I gained a lot of pounds.
6. My son is still on blended learning so we can still travel even on weekdays.
7. I experienced Northern Lights during our vacation in Norway, not once but twice.
8. Lastly, I have no idea that the year 2022 would be a revenge travel year for our family. We did not plan this because of the global pandemic so I was really surprised when I was making my year-end video, every month pala kami may travel. Finally, nakalipad na rin kami, we’ve been to Norway, Cebu and Vietnam. It is one for the books.

Sharing our travel memories…

January

Acuaverde Beach Resort is our first getaway in year 2022. This is a big achievement for us because we’ve been meaning to go to the beach and after so many tries, we finally made it. We stayed here for 3 days and 2 nights and we really enjoyed our trip because the resort was not crowded and we had a nice view from our room.

February

We spent our 16th Wedding Anniversary in Chateau Hestia and we’re so happy that we don’t need antigen tests anymore as long as we are fully vaccinated.

March

For the past two years, I’ve been meaning to travel again so when the opportunity came, I immediately grab it. Even though my husband could not join our trip because he is so busy with work, he still convinced me to travel so I can spend time with my mom. It’s been three years since the last time we’ve seen each other. My son is still in online classes so we were able to stay in Norway for 3 months.

I’m so proud of my son because, despite the time difference, he still attended his online classes and walang late or absent. And because we are awake at midnight, we were able to experience Northern Lights.

It was still winter season in Norway so we were able to experience skiing, and snow sledding and of course, we even built snowman. We did not waste our time, namasyal na kami agad even if it means revisiting the places that we’ve been to. We went to Garten, Uthaug, Vallersund, Opphaug and Brekstad

April

Every time we go to Norway, I always look forward to our fishing adventure

We also had a chance to visit Stugudalen during Holy Week.

May

We revisited Trondheim, celebrated Mother’s Day kahit hindi Mother’s Day sa Norway, we celebrated 17th of May, hiked Synnørsfjellet and went to Fevag, Rissa, HasselvikaStorfosna and KrÃ¥vÃ¥g.

June

Vacation is over so we traveled back to the Philippines just in time for my husband’s birthday. We started our trip at Radisson Blu Hotel Trondheim and arrived at Sheraton Manila Club, for my husband’s birthday celebration.

July

We unplugged at Lilom Resort, this was supposed to be our Father’s Day celebration but we got sick so we postponed our trip.

August

It is my birthday month so I celebrated my birthday at The Henry Resort Taramindu Laiya and Marriott Cafe

September

October is my son’s birthday month but we celebrated it in advance so we went to Sheraton Mactan for a birthday staycation.

October

My mom was back in the Philippines so we had a family outing at 88 Spa and Resort.

November

My mom stayed in our house for three weeks so pinasyal namin siya. We had breakfast at Taza Fresh Table, we visited Caleruega and Sonya’s Garden and we had a staycation at Solana Resort

December

December is a busy month not because of the holiday season but because of our travel trips too. For my mom’s despedida, we had Breakfast at Balay Dako, well, despedida na for us since hindi kami makakasama sa family outing since nasa Vietnam pa kami.

Speaking of Vietnam, we are fortunate to travel to Da Nang, Vietnam. It was not on my bucket list but I am thankful that we were able to visit this place. Sheraton Da Nang is the most picturesque hotel or resort that I have visited so far.

For our Christmas tradition, we had Breakfast at The Farmer’s Table Tagaytay

2022 has been the best year for our family and how I wish that we will have more travel trips this year 2023. But since we have a different goal and we need to save more for it so tipid-tipid muna.

“Life is strange, beautiful, and terrifying… and I am thankful for every minute of it that I have had. I am thankful for every minute yet to come.” – Benjamin W. Bass

Why Women Wear Modest Swimsuits

Are you familiar with the word “burkini"? If not, you are not alone because all along, I thought it is just called a wetsuit. According to Wikipedia, Burkini or Burqini is a style of swimsuit for women that covers the whole body except the face, hands, and feet. It was designed by Aheda Zanetti, a Lebanese-Australian who saw the needs of Muslim girls and women. She designed this sportswear so girls and women in the Muslim community will be comfortable on their pool or beach trip.

Twelve years ago, my family went to Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia and one of our itineraries is to visit Manukan Island. It was our first beach trip outside the Philippines. And during our trip, one thing I immediately noticed is the swimwear of the girls and women, they are all covered from head to toe. I was not really surprised because I know that Islam is the official religion of Malaysia so I already expected that they are conservative when it comes to clothes.

But when I saw their swimsuit, how I wish, I can also find the best modest swimsuit in the Philippines so I can also enjoy the pool or beach. If you are a regular reader of this blog, you know that I have psoriasis, it is not contagious but I don’t want strangers to look at my skin whenever we swim so I prefer a swimsuit that can hide my flare-ups.

So I am glad that nowadays, the burkini is no longer for religious purposes because there are women like me who prefer modest swimsuits. Few reasons why women prefer modest swimwear.

1. Religion Purposes
2. Protection from harmful UV rays
3. Not all women are comfortable displaying their bodies.
4. Some women want to hide their skin conditions or stretchmarks.
5. Survivors of skin cancer

How Can We Beat Inflation at Home?

Inflation is one of the familiar words that I always hear and read since my college days because Economics is one of my subjects but until now, this word lingers in my mind. Even though I’m a full-time homemaker now, this word still affects my financial decisions and our monthly budget.

What is inflation? According to IMF, inflation measures how much more expensive a set of goods and services has become over a certain period, usually a year. In short, it is when the cost of things goes up and our purchasing power decreases.

Some people define inflation as the worst tax and silent budget killer because we sometimes do not notice its effects unless the inflation rate is really high. I noticed the effects of inflation when I needed to increase our budget for food and grocery because even though we are buying the same stuff, our usual budget is not enough. And when we started to travel again. I was shocked when I saw the rate of the airfare, visa, and accommodation.

Everything is so expensive now compared to the past because of inflation so the question is “How Can We Beat Inflation at Home?”

1. Have a budget

Nobody taught me how to budget my money but since I was a kid, budgeting my own allowance is part of my system and I always make sure to save part of it for my needs, wants, or emergencies. And because of this, “Having a budget” is number one on my list.

Dave Ramsey said that “A budget isn’t about restricting what you can spend. It gives you permission to spend without guilt or regret.”

Having a budget gives me an idea of how much money should I save, invest, allocate and spend. It helped me watch what I spend and stick to my spending limits to make sure that I only spend what we earn. I have a budget for our expenses, savings/investment, and of course leisure.

50/30/20 budgeting is a popular guide when it comes to budgeting but of course, you can change this depending on your income and lifestyle. If you also believe in tithing or giving to charity, you can allocate 10-15% for this.

50% - spend for your needs
30% - spend on your wants
20% - set aside for savings

To help you manage your finances, you can also use Budget Planning Calculator. Just enter the amount of your net income and it would translate into budget percentages. This will help you in understanding where to spend your money and learn how to create a budget that works for you.

2. Cut unnecessary expenses

If expenses are over the income, we need to cut unnecessary expenses like managing our shopping or should I say “budol” spending, limiting our food trips and caffeine intake, and checking our monthly subscriptions. These small sacrifices can help you in dealing with inflation.

3. Look for cheaper alternatives or try new stores

Branded stuff is expensive so you can also try to be creative in your purchases and look for alternatives. Try budget-friendly store brands for cleaning products, toiletries, and even food brands. If you don’t want to change brands, wait for a sale, look for coupons and vouchers, or shop in bulk.

Whenever I shop, I don't buy everything in one store because I know some stuff is cheaper in other stores or online shops.

4. Look for free alternatives

I mentioned before about monthly subscriptions, you can cancel those subscriptions if you want to save money. I don’t usually subscribe if there are free options. I don’t mind watching or hearing ads for less than a minute for free subscriptions.

Traveling is not cheap but you can look for free admission, free tours, or tourist spots that are open to the public. There is nothing wrong with exploring for free and looking for cheap things to do in your place.

5. Postpone big-ticket purchases

Are you planning to buy a house or a car or do you want to travel the world? There is nothing wrong with fulfilling these dreams but you have to think carefully. You can postpone big-ticket purchases if it is not immediately necessary so you won’t hurt your budget or worse, accumulate debt.

6. Learn to negotiate

Learn to negotiate for freebies, better deals, or lower prices. If you are using a credit card, ask for a free annual fee. If you are planning to invest, learn to research and negotiate for a better deal. If you are planning to buy appliances or furniture, ask about different payment options and most likely, you can save more if you buy in cash.

7. Consider ways to increase your income

Sometimes even though we are trying to budget and save, expenses are still over the income. It is hard to meet financial obligations so in this case, we should learn how to negotiate for better pay because even the salary increases, the inflation rate is bigger. If promotion and salary increases are not possible, make extra money outside of the regular job or create a passive income.

Some people earn more by renting out their unused cars, house, or lots. Some people are brave enough to start a business.

8. Diversify your investments

Having savings is good but investing for the long term is key. Learn to diversify your investments, you can invest in real estate like buying a home, condominium, or lot. You can try mutual funds, stock market, or Pag-ibig MP2, the return is better than just saving your money in the bank. Interest earnings in a savings account make us poorer as inflation grows.

9. Invest in yourself

One thing is for sure, our future is uncertain so always invest in yourself so we can be prepared for uncertainties of the financial future. Do not forget to update or learn new skills. Study more so you can stay on top if there are changes in business needs.

10. Remember your priorities

Joe Biden said, “Don't tell me what you value, show me your budget, and I'll tell you what you value.”

Overall, it is all about priorities. You can beat inflation if you know how to budget, save, invest and control your spending habits. Try not to live on credit cards and accumulate debts.

Breakfast at The Farmer’s Table Tagaytay

My mind and body are still in holiday mode but today is the first day of school for the year 2023 so I mustered up enough energy to move. Well, I’m a morning person so I really wake up early but for the past few weeks, I stayed in our bed even though I’m awake. My husband and son are on vacation so I don't need to prepare early breakfast, late ang gising ng mga kasama ko.

It is the first week of the year 2023 so I am starting to declutter my phone gallery, let me start with our recent trip to Tagaytay. We usually go to Tagaytay every Christmas Day as part of our tradition but for the past few months, nakailang balik na kami dito. We had Breakfast at Taza Fresh Table and Balay Dako so I don’t know where to go na

Then I remembered “The Farmer’s Table Tagaytay” so I suggested this to my husband. He messaged the restaurant but he was informed that they are fully booked but they accept walk-ins if we are willing to wait. So we took a risk and in our mind, kung wala available, we will just go to Sonya’s Garden

We woke up early and we arrived at the restaurant before 6:30AM, we saw a number of people waiting already but it is not enough to occupy the restaurant so we felt relieved, no need to transfer. Since the restaurant is not yet open, the staff informed us that we can explore the garden.

So we had a quick tour even though, we‘ve been here a few times already. We experienced glamping, we availed massage and spa and we had a food trip here in Nurture Wellness Village. There are a few changes and they had rebranding, so the old restaurant is now “The Farmer’s Table” with a new name and new menu.

The staff ushered us to our table before 7AM but they really waited for 7AM before they took our order. You need to scan the QR code to browse the menu. Their menu is available online too so I already browsed their menu prior to our trip.

For breakfast meals, they have Brunch Faves which you can order all day, or the Good Morning Tagaytay meal. GMT is a typical Filipino Tagaytay breakfast served with garlic rice, 2 eggs of any style, and house-made pickled atchara. My son ordered from the Special Holiday Menu

We ordered Mr. Jones US Beef Tapa PHP420, Amadeo Style Garlic Pepper Longaniza PHP395, Lengua Estofado PHP695, Garlic Rice PH105, Americano PHP195, and Chocnut Hot Chocolate Eh PHP195.

During our visit, the temperature is 19C and it was windy so it is really cold but we were happy because our food is warm unlike in our experience at Napa at Crosswinds last year. Moving on, the breakfast meal is on the pricey side but it has a huge serving naman. The tapa is just okay but I liked their Garlic Pepper Longaniza. The Lengua Estofado is good for sharing pala so my son was not able to finish this, take out na lang. The Chocnut Hot Chocolate Eh is just okay, we prefer our own version of hot chocolate

And because it was so cold, we ate fast so ito na yata ang pinakamabilis namin na kain sa restaurant. Parang sa fast food lang kami kumain. Lol. But I’m pretty sure that we will return in the future and try other meals.
