Lunch at Chicken Deli

Chicken Deli is one of the newest restaurants in SM Sta Rosa and we’ve tried it last Saturday. We ordered the sulit meals which is good for two and additional order of chicken. This is really sulit meals because you can eat kare-kare for only P159, with free soup and rice all you can. You can have drinks for additional P10. We like the kare-kare but not the chicken.

Update: June 27, 2015

After two years we revisited Chicken Deli restaurant in SM Sta Rosa. It was time for lunch so most of the restaurants and fastfood were crowded and good thing Chicken Deli was not yet packed.

They still offer meal that is good for two persons plus free soup and unlimited rice. We ordered the Liempo P209 and BBQ meal for my son. The price is affordable and taste is just ok.

Cutting Edge: Top Knife Brands for Chefs

If you are looking to give your kitchen supplies an upgrade that makes a large impact in preparing meals, you might want to consider your kitchen cutlery. Knives are a vital component of the kitchen, no matter whether you are a home cook or a top chef. Few items are handled and used so frequently during meal preparation. Before you head to the knife store, take a moment to consider the knives you purchase.

When you visit the knife and kitchen store, one thing that you quickly notice is the number of different cutlery brands selling chef knives. When it comes to making a selection, you may be tempted to simply buy the best knife you can afford. However, unless you know the aspects that make one knife better than another, you may end up simply buying the most expensive knife that you can (and expense does not necessarily equate to quality). Familiarize yourself with the anatomy of a good knife beforehand, and research things like the bolster, the bevel, and the tang that best suit your needs. A little extra work on the front end ensures a successful purchase at the knife and chef store.

Knives are critical tools in any kitchen, and one of the first things that should be targeted in your kitchen is supply upgrade. You likely spend more time using a knife than you realize during meal preparation, so it is easy to understand why selecting a top brand is important. With just a little research, you can rest assured that your new knife lets you slice and dice like a pro.

2nd year Blogversary

Now, I’m celebrating my 2nd year blogversary. I can’t believe that I’m blogging for two years already and though I have very limited time now I’m still trying to update this blog. Thank you to all my readers who still read and comment on my blog post.

In the span of two years I’ve gained new ideas, met online friends and learned lessons through blogging. I’m sharing to you my experiences and lessons that I’ve learned so far.

1. If you still remember my very controversial Cebu’s Lechon post,  that was the first time that I received negative comments after six months of blogging. Somehow it affected me but thanks to all the comments that I’ve received because it enlightened me. I know that I’m just giving my honest review and I’ve realized that negative comments are inevitable and you just have to live with it as long as you are in blogosphere. Click here to read more.

2. Last year, I attended “Healthier Moms, Happier Kids” event . It was the first blogging event that I’ve attended because it fell on weekend schedule. During the said event, I feel so out of place because I don’t know any blogger there and most of them are talking about events that they have attended and events that they are going to attend. I can’t relate and it seems that they have known each other for so long.

I seldom receive invites but most of the invitation I received I declined. I’m not fond of attending event because the location is always NCR, schedule is always weekday and I feel that it is not my thing. There are bloggers who enjoy attending event and I’m not one of them. I realized that attending blogging event is not my priority because I started this blog to share our family story not events. Don’t get me wrong, if there’s one good event and if I have spare time I will attend again. I’m a full time mom without yaya so it is nearly impossible for me to enjoy attending events.

3. Last August, I had Favordeal Giveaway. I received an offer to host jewelry giveaway. I google the site and I’ve seen that I’m not the only blogger she tapped to host the giveaway and it looks legit so I said yes, but when the giveaway has ended, this girl is not replying anymore and I kept on sending my message stating the name of the winners and chosen prizes.

It took them a month to ship the prizes and last month I received an email from one of the winners. She said “kulang ang nareceive niya”. I email again my contact and until now no reply. I really apologize to the winner who received an incomplete prizes, I feel her because I experienced the worst. I won in two giveaways but unfortunately I did not receive my prizes.

I was so disappointed about the failed giveaway and because of that incident I declined two giveaways offer because I’m afraid that it will happen again. But then I realized that not all company are the same, I just need to make sure that the company and contact is really professional and legit. I have to remind myself “Don’t be too trusting!”. My last giveaway was good because after I sent the name and email of the winner, Abbey immediately sent the ebook.

4. Lastly, sharing my favorite blogging quote that I’ve posted in “Why I love being a Mom and Blogger” post “Don’t live to blog or blog to live, but live then blog”.

Again, thank you for taking time out of your day to read my post and hope you stay.

Our 10 Years Anniversary

Time really flies so fast and today we’re hitting our 10th year anniversary as a couple. If you have been reading this blog for quite some time now, you’re aware that February is our BF-GF anniversary. I said “yes” 10 years ago and I said “yes, I do” 7 years ago at the same place which is Intramuros.

San Salvador Island

Whenever people asked us where we met, we always say “UST” because we’re both alumni of UST but the truth is we met on an island. We’re both members of Haribon-UST now EARTH-UST but we never ever crossed our path for one whole year. Whenever I attended an event he was not there and whenever he attended an event I was not present. Summer of 2002, we both attended a leadership training seminar of Haribon-UST in San Salvador Island. It is a protected island in Zambales. That was our first meeting but it was not love at first sight, we didn’t mind each other and we have our own set of friends.

UST

Even in school, we never crossed our path because we have different courses, schedules, and buildings. He was in the Engineering building and I was in Commerce building, he always stays in the library and I don’t go there. The only time that we see each other is when we have an organization meeting because we’re both officers of Haribon-UST. We became friends then lovers and the rest is already history. A few days from now we will be celebrating our 7th year wedding anniversary. I don’t know what will be the celebration because my son is still sick and we have no travel plans this year. Last February 2012, I’ve made a promise that I will not book any trip even there’s a seat sale and even I had expiring miles last year, I did not book any flight. Anyway, it is just less than 2000 miles.

When January 2013 came, I felt so bored because I was not planning any trip and I told hubby that my son wanted to go to Legoland. My son is now into lego and he saw the pictures while I was reading a blog post. But my husband declared a travel ban this year, waah! He said no travel outside Luzon. Hmm, so pwede Tuguegarao, Palawan, Naga, and Legazpi trip. He said no travel via plane.

I’m grateful to God for giving us ten wonderful years and I’m praying that there will be more years to come. I thank God for blessing me much more than I deserve and I could not ask for more.

“To hear the laughter of a child, to wake up next to the love of your life, to know that God has placed them on earth for you…You are blessed!”

And finally, he remembered that I dislike flowers so he gave me this, chocolate for me and a bear for my son. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Relive the Art of Love Letters on Valentine's Day

It’s the time of the year again and love is already in the air!  As Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, we are definitely thinking of ways on how to make it special for our loved ones. How about bringing to life the almost-forgotten form of communication? Love letters, in this case, will never go out of style!

Here are some tips on Love Letter Writing this Heart’s Day:

Touch  and melt a heart

Share your intents with sweet notes using Post-it® Super Sticky Notes in heart shape!  Call that special one with those sweet terms of endearment.  It won’t fail to make them smile. It’s time to be creative!

Praise and make someone’s heart skip a beat

Being appreciated and praised is something that everyone longs to hear. Just put the positive lenses on and look deep within someone’s strength. You may say, “You are my idea of ‘strength,’ Mommy!” “You’re a good man, Dad! One of the best there is!” or “You are made of great possibilities. Keep your hopes up and move mountains, dear!” Remember that simple deeds can drive and motivate people to do better and excel. Be that cheerleader to those tired hearts this Valentine’s Day!

“Thank You!” from a grateful heart

Not only an exchange of “I Love You’s” can be given on Valentine’s day. A simple Thank You note in Post-it® Super Sticky Note in heart shape can work wonders! You may write, “Thank you for always preparing my baon,” “The world is a better place with people like you. Thanks for being around,” or “Thank you for helping me solve my Math problems, teacher. You are the best!” You may use rubber stamps with cute designs and use colored pens to do this.

Write the things you can’t say personally with a sincere heart

There’s nothing more worth keeping than a heartfelt note. Disclose your heart and say what you want to say. Express your love and those sweet words you are unspoken for and melt their hearts.

Entice excitement by giving incomplete notes

Send them hearty lines in trickles and let your loved ones feel the thrill in looking for the series of your notes. Secretly, distribute and stick them on your loved one’s things and let them be surprised! Have a Post-it® Note within your reach with Post-it® Notes Heart Dispenser and just write what you feel anytime of the day.

Give love and make this moment worth remembering!

Acute Bronchitis

I’m nursing my son for three days now and I’m praying that he will be ok. As a mom, it hurts me to see that my son is sick and if only I can take his sickness, I will do it. It pains me because I can’t do anything, all I can do is to give him the medicine that he dislikes and to persuade him to drink milk and eat his food which is not easy.

As I mentioned in my old post, we went to Max’s EDSA and we also visited my sister. My son was busy playing games in laptop and all of a sudden, he vomited. I have no idea why he vomited but I was already worried. He has no fever but he was not active. We decided to leave early so he can rest.

Then last Monday, he had fever already, we can’t check the temperature because our ever reliable thermometer has no battery so we just went to the hospital. We went to different pedia because we can’t wait anymore till 2PM (his pedia’s schedule).

I thought it was a flu but I checked the medical certificate again, it is acute bronchitis, according to drugs.com “Acute bronchitis is swelling and irritation in child’s air passages. The irritation may cause him to cough or have other breathing problems. Acute bronchitis often starts because of another illness, such as cold or the flu.” In addition it last for about two weeks and not a serious illness. Oh no, that is too long. Next check-up is on Monday.

Dinner at Café Lulu Restaurant and Deli

On our way home from Max’s EDSA Caloocan, my husband suggested eating at Café Lulu Restaurant and Deli for our early dinner. It is located in Bangkal, Makati City, right side going to SLEX. It is just a small modest restaurant.

Café Lulu serves European dishes so when we’re browsing the menu we can’t decide which food to order because it’s hard to read and pronounce the dishes. Hehe! We just ordered the dishes that we know, Frankfurter Sausage, Tomato Pesto Pasta and Chicken Fingers. I forgot the exact price but it is neither cheap nor expensive.

I love the place because it is not crowded and we’re the only customers inside the restaurant. The service is ok and the food is also good.

Book Review: To Bliss and Back E-Book Review

I love reading inspirational books so when Abbey offered me to read an ebook; I did not have any second thought because this ebook is the real-life story of bloggers. The first sets of books of Life Well Blogged are No Laughing Allowed, To Bliss and Back, and Holly Daze: and I chose “To Bliss and Back”.

I started reading this ebook without any expectations but I was hooked immediately and this is the reason why I have fewer posts on my blog because I’m busy laughing and reading this ebook.

I love this ebook because it is a real confession story of different bloggers, both men, and women. These bloggers are brave enough to share real-life experiences that can inspire readers. Stories that you can relate because they really happen in any couple and even single mom. It shows that you are not alone and there is no such thing as a perfect marriage, a perfect husband, and a perfect wife. Marriage is indeed a process; don’t expect that you will stay on the honeymoon stage because there are ups and downs. Be prepared because there are a lot of things that you will discover along the way.

This ebook will not only make you laugh but there are marriage tips that may help you. I will be sharing some points or lines that I like.

1. Communication is really important but expects for communication breakdown and selective listening.

“Some days it’s difficult to communicate effectively when so much is being said and left unsaid”

2. Things that you should teach your son “how to be a perfect man”.

“Put your family first. Making lots of money is great, being non-existent because of it, isn’t. Every day is precious. If you knew this was your last day on earth, would you work till 7PM? Would you really stop for drinks on the way home? Would you really just get your kids every other weekend like the court papers say? Or would you come home and wrap yourself up like a pretzel around the ones you love? Any old man will tell you the truth. Ask one what he regrets”

3. Learn to resurface.

“Take some time off, take it, find time and make it happen”

 “Let him help you.”

“To the husband - Don’t forget her. Don’t give up on her. She is worth it. Remember her.”

There are more lessons and tips that you can learn by reading this ebook. This is not only for married couples, whether you are single, dating, engaged, or divorced I’m pretty sure that you will enjoy the stories.

You can buy this ebook on Amazon, click here or you can join my giveaway and have a chance to win a copy of “To Bliss and Back” ebook. Ebook for Kindle or Nook but it can be read on computers as well. I don’t have Kindle and Nook and I was able to read the copy (bookmark it).

Enter all your entries in rafflecopter. This giveaway is open worldwide and will end on February 8, 2012. Michi Photostory is not compensated to host this giveaway and will not be responsible for sending the prize. Ebook will be sent by Life Well Blogged directly to the winner of the contest.

Baked Mussels Recipe

Mussel is one of the cheapest dishes that you can prepare at home so I don’t really understand why it is so expensive if you will eat this in the restaurant. I rarely order this in the restaurant because of the price tapos bitin pa. Yesterday, I made Baked Mussels and surprisingly my son loves it.

this is cheddar cheese, not Quickmelt
Sharing the recipe from Quickmelt cheese box.

60 pcs fresh mussels
½ cup butter
2 tbsp minced garlic
¼ cup all purpose flour
½ cup chicken stock
1 cup milk
Salt and pepper
¾ cup Quickmelt cheese

1. Steam mussels until shells open. Remove and discard the empty shell and arrange it on the baking tray.

2. In a saucepan, melt butter, and sauté garlic. Add flour and mix well. Stir in stock and milk and season with salt and pepper. Remove from heat when the mixture thickens lightly.

3. Spoon white sauce onto mussels.

4. Top with cheese.

5. Bake at 350F until cheese melts. Garnish with chopped parsley.

Blue Bunny Ice Cream

I never knew about Blue Bunny Ice Cream till I became S&R member.  I always see this in S&R fridge but I was having second thought if I will try it or not since I’m not familiar with the brand. Well, Blue Bunny is an international brand of ice cream. It is made in Le Mars, Iowa which is known as “The Ice Cream Capital of the World”. This ice cream is cheaper compared to other international brand of ice cream but it is still expensive if we compared it to our local brand.

Last month, we bought Blue Bunny Premium Pistachio Almond; it was on sale for P259.95. My husband loves this, for me the taste is just ok and my son dislikes it.

Photo from bluebunny.com

Then last Saturday we tried new flavor which is Ice Cream Cookie Creations White Chocolate Macadamia Nut. It is a little bit sweet but it was an instant hit to our family. You can really taste the chunk of white chocolate and macadamia nut cookie.

Photo from bluebunny.com

It is now my goal to try other Blue Bunny ice cream if it is on sale.

Update: March 4, 2013

We bought Blue Bunny Toasted Almond Fudge last weekend; it was on sale because of the Early Bird Member’s Treat. Among the three, this is now my favorite flavor so far. I love the creamy taste of chocolate ice cream plus the crunchy toasted almond. But my husband prefers pistachio.

Parentgiving

Since year 2009 I regularly visit my grandmother in Victoria, Laguna to give her monthly allowance from my mom and to help her with her errands, this includes our trip in the grocery. She lives in the province so the grocery and wet market are too far from her house. Taxis are not available so it is difficult for her to commute and of course she is not that strong to carry all the shopping bags.

I’m not complaining but I wish that parentgiving.com is available here in the Philippines because this is a great help to all adults, seniors and even caregivers. Parentgiving is a comprehensive website that offers thousands of products such as bed and bath safety products, practical tools, medical and healthcare supplies and other stuff that elderly needs at home.  Even overnight adult diaper is available, you can check the website to see MoliCare Super Plus sample.

The site is user friendly, customer can place their order online and most of the orders are ship within 24 hours and generally arrives in 1-5 business days. Parentgiving can ship in 48 US states except Alaska, Hawaii and any international destinations.

Parentgiving site will benefit all seniors who have limited mobility and even those people who want to be independent. If you want more information about the products, how to order or shipping, do not hesitate to go to the website.

Shrimp Wrapped in Bacon

I love shrimp but I only have few shrimp recipes so when I saw this recipe in one of the “Spoon” episode I immediately tried it. They use an expensive ham and goat cheese and I only have bacon and cheddar cheese but it didn’t stop me so I’ve made my own version, “Shrimp Wrapped in Bacon”.

Ingredients:

Shrimp
Bacon
Cheese
½ Butter
¼ cup garlic
Salt and Pepper to taste

1.Remove the shell of the shrimp. Season with salt and pepper. Wrapped the shrimp and cheese in bacon.

2.Saute garlic in butter.

3.Pour the butter and garlic mixture over the shrimp and bacon.

4.Bake for 10 to 15 minutes at 425F or until shrimp and bacon is cook.

Shrimp + Cheese + Bacon = Yum

Luggage Organizer

If you’ve read my What’s in Mom’s Bag?” post, you already knew that I’m not a light packer so it is really a challenge to pack for a six days trip. Last month we went to Hongkong and Macau with one 20 kilos luggage and one hand carry luggage, imagine my dilemma in packing.

But thank God for this luggage organizer because it helped me big time in packing our stuff. It is indeed very useful and it made our luggage very organized. I bought this in Heat Wave Summer Bazaar.

Things to Consider When Planning an Itinerary

Travel itinerary is something personal because you have to plan and decide according to your preference, lifestyle, and budget. We always travel as a family so expect that our trip is kids-friendly. I’m not a shopaholic so shopping is not included in my itinerary. I am a budget traveler so most of the time we stayed in a hostel and guesthouses but there are times that we splurged too and try high-end resorts and hotels.

Planning an itinerary is not easy especially if you have limited time but let me share with you the things that I consider when I’m planning our itinerary. Every time I plan an itinerary. I have to consider seven things; Place, Days, Budget, Tourist Spots, Accommodation, Directions, and Weather.

Things to Consider When Planning an Itinerary

1. Destination

Of course, I have to know which place we are going. Is it a domestic or international trip? If budget is not a problem, booking a private jet could be an option to take us to our destination in style. Plus, making use of a resource like this page about jet card pricing could help me to save money on the cost of this so that I could put it towards more luxury flights in the future. But the reality is that, more often than not, I am on a pretty strict budget so I have to check lots of different airlines where we can score cheap airfare to get us from A to B.

Do we need a visa or not? If we need a visa, I need to prepare all the required requirements and schedule an appointment at the embassy or accredited travel agency.

What is the location of the place? Is there a possibility that we can do some side trips?

Example:

Hongkong – Macau,
CDO – Camiguin,
Bacolod, Iloilo, and Guimaras
Singapore - Malaysia
Oslo - Copenhagen and Sweden

2. Number of Days

It is very important to know how many days I have to enjoy the place because if I have limited time I can’t do side trips and I will just stick to one place just like our Kota Kinabalu and Cebu trip. I have very limited time so no side trip in Brunei and no side trip in Bohol.

3. Budget

As a budget traveler, as much as possible I do stick to a budget. I try my best to save at the same time enjoy our trips. I have to note if one tourist spot has no entrance fee or how much is the entrance fee. If there are special passes or tickets that we can avail so we can save money on exploring the city or visit different attractions at a fraction cost.

4. Tourist Spots

I always list down popular destinations, attractions, and even must-try restaurants then I will choose. For example in Hongkong, here are the popular tourist spots that I can visit.

a. Disneyland
b. Ocean Park
c. Avenue of Stars
d. The Peak
e. Tsim Sha Tsui (Harbour City)
f. Mongkok Markets
g. Causeway Bay
h. Snoopy World
i. Stanley
f. Wax Museum
g. Other Museums
h. Nanlian Garden & Chilin Nunnery
i. Sky100

Since I only have four days to enjoy Hongkong, I chose Disneyland, Ngong Ping Village, Avenues of Stars, The Peak, HarbourCity, Nan Lian Garden, and Chi Lin Nunnery. Then I will decide which tourist spot is for Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, and so forth.

Day 1: 1881 Heritage, Clock Tower, Avenue of Stars, and The Peak
Day 2: Nan Lian Garden, Ngong Ping Village and CityGate Outlet.
Day 3: Hongkong Disneyland
Day 4: Hongkong Disneyland

5. Accommodation

Depending on my budget, I will look for a hostel, hotel, or guesthouse. I have to consider the location of the accommodation. As much as possible, I chose a hotel that is accessible to different transportation so commuting won't be a problem. Since hotel foods are expensive, it is important that there are restaurants or fastfoods in the area.

Example:

Yiu Fai Guesthouse – I chose this because it is walking distance from 1881 Heritage, Clock Tower Avenue of Stars, and MTR. It is near MTR so it is not difficult to go to Nan Lian Garden and Ngong Ping Village. Lastly, it is affordable too.

Hollywood Hotel – though this is expensive, we still reserve a room for experience and proximity to Hongkong Disneyland Resort.

6. Directions

I search for maps so I know how can I go to a guesthouse, hotel, tourist spots, and others. What is the cheaper way to get there, MTR, Taxi or hire a car or van?

7. Weather

Of course, don't forget to check the weather, is it winter, spring, summer or fall. You have to pack the right clothes and gear that you need to survive the weather during your trip. Don't forget to pack vitamins, medicines, and even a first aid kit.

Hope this helps. It may be an arduous task but I do encourage you to make your own itinerary and you will feel proud of yourself. "A little step may be the beginning of a great journey"

Food Trip in Macau

I don’t have any list of must-try restaurant in Macau all I wanted is to taste their Lechon Macau so we eat whenever and wherever we want. During our first night, my husband bought food here.

Macau Recipes
Second day, we took our breakfast in McDonalds and we took advantage the free taste on our way to Ruins of St. Paul.

We tried the famous Portuguese Egg Tart is Pastelaria Koi Kei.

We’re already full so we just bought dumplings here for our lunch and went back to Hotel.

For dinner, we went to New Yaohan Mall to look for the food court so I could taste Lechon Macau but we could not locate it so we ended up in 7-11, they have rice meals which we like so the following morning, hubby bought rice meals in 7-11 for our breakfast. 7-11 is few minutes’ walk from Hotel Sintra.

I finally tasted Lechon Macau in Venetian Hotel Fastfood.

We bought Portuguese Egg Tart again but this time in Lord’s Stow Bakery and Café. I have no idea that Lord Stow’s egg tarts have been available in the Philippines since 1999. They have branches in Madison Square, Banawe and MOA. #pambihira.

For dinner, we ate at the airport. Macau International airport is not that big, so if you’re planning for Hongkong and Macau trip, book Philippines to Macau and Hongkong to Philippines because HKIA is big, there are so many restaurants and shops so you will not get bored while waiting for your flight.

Note: Hongkong Dollar is widely accepted in Macau so we did not exchange our money to MOP. 1HKD = 1MOP

Day 6: Macau Hotel Hopping

This was our last day in Macau so we still woke up early to finish our itinerary. After our breakfast we went to Grand Lisboa Hotel and Wynn Hotel, we were supposed to watch Prosperity Show and Dragon Show but unfortunately, it was under maintenance.

Imagine we’ve been in Macau for three days already and natapat pa sa Maintenance Schedule yung pagpunta namin. I don’t know the schedule of maintenance; if I knew it we will visit this on our first night or second day. Waah! Sayang, there is no entrance fee for this show. Pinoy Security Guard told me,

SG: Ma’m balik na lang kayo.
Me: Uwi na kami mamaya.
SG: Balik na lang kayo sa Christmas.

If I’m rich, I will definitely go back. hehe! So we went back to Grand Lisboa to ride the free shuttle going to Macau Ferry Terminal.

Next stop is Fisherman’s Wharf, which is walking distance from the Ferry Terminal.

Then we went back to Hotel Sintra for check-out. You can leave your baggage after check-out but we did not leave our baggage because we know that other hotels have their own storage area. We took advantage of the free shuttle bus from Hotel Sintra to City of Dreams.

City of Dreams

We left our baggage in City of Dreams’ cloak room and watched Bubble Show, this show is not free. MOP50 for adults and MOP25 for kids.

Venetian Hotel

We were hungry already so we picked up our luggage and transferred to Venetian Hotel. Again, we took the free shuttle bus from the City of Dreams to Venetian Hotel. Finally, I was able to taste Lechon Macau.

Venetian is quite big and sometimes we feel that we’re lost, good thing that there were so many Pinoy working in Macau, so may napagtatanungan kami. Pinoy Hotel Staff even gave a Venetian Hotel Map and assisted us in transferring our luggage from one storage room to main lobby storage room.

From the main lobby, we took a free shuttle bus again to reach the Macau International Airport. We did not spend a single centavo on transportation. Thank God for the free shuttle bus.
