5 Tips to Get Through the Summer Heat

Summer is coming and with it, heat will grace us across the country. In recent history, the weather has become more intense and extreme, so getting through the summer months can sometimes be a struggle. If the predictions are correct, this summer is on track to be one of the hottest on record. In order to combat the heat, people have to find several ways to make themselves comfortable without spending hundreds on cooling bills.

Here are some great tips to get you through the next few months that are convenient and easy in your pocket:

1. Go to a public beach

If you live in a beach area or within a few hours drive, this option is one of the best. Get a tent and a cooler and grab a couple of your favorite drinks, your towel, a book or whatever else helps you to pass the time. Pack it all into your car and head to the beach at any opportunity you have. Not only is beach time relaxing but swimming in the ocean water is always refreshing and energizing. Aside from that, it is usually completely free. If you want some extra amenities included, look for a beach club that offers services like a restaurant/bar and lounge chairs on the beach.

2. Get into the pool

There are a few ways to go about this. If you have the funds to afford your own pool, you are lucky to not to have to leave your home to fight the heat of summer. All you will have to worry about how to keep your drinks cool! Coolers come in many shapes, sizes, and price points and you find good advice on websites, view thecoolerlist.com. Don’t have your own pool? A membership to a neighborhood pool club is generally not too expensive so you may consider joining. Another option is to join a gym that offers a pool.

3. Have a drink

A cold drink is a very refreshing beverage, so having one at the hottest time of the day can be a good and refreshing way to get through it. Of course, there are many options to choose from, so just pick one you like. If you choose beer, remember, not always the cheapest is the worst or the most expensive the best. Take it very easy with the quantity; it is refreshing and tastes good but drinking too much is dehydrating and of course, never drink and drive.

4. Check your air conditioner system

Regardless of if you are out of the house all day, your AC unit is working all day long to keep your house cool. In the summer, it is very important to have your air conditioner running well. Before summer hits, hire a specialist and have them check for leaks and give it the proper maintenance. Take good care of it - it is your best friend when it comes to battling summer heat!

5. Buy the proper clothes

Clothing is a very important thing when it comes to extreme weather. If you live in an area that tends be hit by strong heat waves during summer, you have to be prepared and buy the right type of clothing. Buy light-colored, breathable clothing that covers your arms and legs and applies sunscreen wherever you don’t have covered. You won’t regret it!

What Matters Most?

Today is the first day of April and just like that, the first quarter of the year is already over. My son already finished one level in grade school, where did the time go?

Recognition Day

We went to school last Tuesday, it was their Recognition Day and we’re happy because he got a Red Eagle Award again this year. I always say that with or without award we are proud of him because we’ve seen his hard work in doing his best. If I will give him an award, I will give him the most improved student.

When he started going to school, at first he just wanted to play and he is not serious in doing his lessons but as time goes by, he is slowly changing and improving his study habits.

Distribution of School Card

I’m not pushing him to be in overall top but I always tell him that he can do more and I’m happy because he is beating his own record. I just got his school card yesterday and his grades are higher compared last year.

"It shouldn't matter how slowly a child learns, as long as we are encouraging them not to stop"

But getting high grades are not really a top priority because what matters most is his attitude in learning new things, achieving his dreams and believing that he can do something.

Summer Vacation

As I’ve mentioned, today is the first day of April and until now I’m convincing my son to enroll in a summer class. Maybe swimming lessons so he can learn this life skill. He took this class before pero nakalimutan din, maybe because he was just 4 yrs old.

          Swimming Graduation

It started last year, my son was not interested in taking any summer class or activity gusto niya lang pahinga sa bahay. Actually, napilit ko lang siya last year na mag McDonalds Kiddie Crew which he really enjoyed naman.

And because he has no plans yet, we’re doing this “Practice Cursive Writing” since last week. It was funny because when I got his school card yesterday, his teacher told me na practice writing daw. Hehehe! Kelan ba kasi gaganda sulat ng anak ko, nabili ko na lahat yata ng writing activity book sa bookstores.

"I don't have bad handwriting. I have my own font"

"More intelligent people tend to think faster, and as a result their handwriting is more sloppy"

How about you, what are your summer plans?

McDonald’s Kiddie Crew

For the last two years, I’ve been meaning to register my son in McDonald’s Kiddie Crew but I have to wait till he hits 6 years old. They were very strict with age so I had no choice but to wait. But now, I noticed that there were kiddie crew as young as 4 years old.

McDonald is the only fastfood near my son’s school and most of the time I stayed there while waiting for my son’s dismissal. Since March 12, I accompanied my son to school until he finishes his graduation practice. At that time, I learned that McDonald’s Kiddie Crew was already open for registration.

I immediately got the registration form, filled up the form and I was so excited to tell my son that I would enroll him in McDonald’s Kiddie Crew. But my son did not like the idea. My husband and I kept on persuading him to join the workshop but he had so many excuses.

Ethan: I can’t do that.
Ethan: I don’t want to work in McDonald.

Finally, after four weeks, he said yes. Unfortunately, the next available date is April 27 to May 1, 2015. I chose the 8-10AM schedule.

Registration Fee: P595
Inclusive of T-shirt, ID with Lace, Cap, Bag, Chef’s Hat, Apron, Meals and Workshop Materials.

After two weeks of waiting, we attended the orientation and got the uniform. The staff toured the kids in the kitchen and my son became interested.

Day 1

Kids introduced themselves (name, age and talent). The kids were divided into two groups. So if group 1 is in the counter the other group will practice their song and dance number.

My son doesn’t like burgers but I was surprised that he ate his burger McDo meal.

Day 2

My son started to enjoy his counter experience. He experienced preparing drinks and putting tissues, spoon and fork and ketchup on the tray.

Day 3

Cheeseburger Making. Kids made their own cheeseburger for their snacks.

I ordered a meal while my son was at the counter. He was happy to serve his mom.

Day 4

The kids painted their McDonalds Happy Meal boxes and presented their talents. My son said his talent is drawing so we just brought his sketch pad.

Day 5

Graduation day. Kids sang “Make it Happen” and danced “Shake it Off”.

I always tell this to my son, stop saying “I can’t do that” or I can’t do this” always say I can do it! So I was really happy when I checked the lyrics of McDonald’s Kiddie Crew theme song. I liked the message.

“As we gather here today, we make our pledge to serve others and be the best. Let nothing bring us down, always say we can. Let the whole world know, we’re gonna make things happen.”

My son enjoyed his first Kiddie Crew Workshop.

We bought the McRib meal (fries + drinks + free umbrella) for P200 because there was a raffle but we did not win. But at least we have McDonald umbrella. hehehe! Hubby said, McRib was just okay.

K5 Learning Review

Summer vacation and no activities at all are not good, I can see that my son is getting bored in the house. We still have our own activity every day, I let him answer all the pages in his school books but I know that it is not enough to keep him busy so I enrolled him in Summer Class for six weeks (2 hours a day). No swimming lesson this year and we’re still contemplating if we will enroll him in Karate Class. Aside from that, I took advantage of this K5 Learning Free Trial offer.

I've been given a 6-week free trial to test and write a review of their program. K5 is an online reading and math program for kids from kindergarten through grade 5. It will help kids in building reading, math, and study skills through independent study. K5 is designed for home use and can be used for after-school, weekend, and summertime supplemental study or in conjunction with a homeschooling program. If you’re not a blogger, you can also try their two weeks free trial here. Registering is easy and no credit card is required so rest assured that it is really free.

My son immediately tried the lesson using the iPad and it was not working so I emailed them regarding my concern and they replied immediately that K5 is not working with a tablet or iPad, because we’re so excited to try we forgot to read the FAQ’s.

I let my son use my laptop so he can access the lesson and of course, I was there to supervise him because he doesn’t know how to use my computer. I have to teach him the basics. I checked the lessons too and after two days I requested an assessment because I feel that the lessons are too easy for my five-year-old son. My son took the assessment so they will know what appropriate lessons to be assigned.

Likes

I like K5 Learning because it is so easy to use, my five-year-old son did not have a hard time studying while I’m doing something. The programs are engaging and exciting because sometimes there are bonus games after lessons. The lessons are structured and goal-oriented and sometimes my son will get more rhyming lessons if he is not yet familiar with them before moving to the next lesson.

My son did not only enhance his reading and math skills but he also learned how to use the computer. At first, he will just click the monitor of my laptop to answer all lessons (thank God for a touchscreen laptop) but before the end of six weeks, he learned how to use the mouse and even type the answer using the keyboard. (Math lesson).

He also learned how to listen and follow instructions. He needs to listen first so he knows what to do with the activity. Even though I’m not supervising him, I can see my son's progress by checking the reports. I noticed that my son loves Math more than English. He is good in all areas of Math compared to English.

Dislikes

My son did not like the Spelling lessons and Math Facts, he is having a hard time spelling words like ‘’They” and “Them”. Maybe my five-year-old son prefers to spell words with pictures like animals, things, places, or words that he is more familiar with.

My son doesn’t like Math Facts because there’s a time limit and speed is needed so even though he knows the answer, the result is not good because he is so slow in typing the answer. Of course, my five-year-old son is not familiar with the keyboard. The lesson is simple, 1+1, 1+8, 1+5, and I know my son knows the answer because he will shout the answer while looking at the numbers on the keyboard.

My son is not familiar with US money so he had a hard time answering the questions (assessment).

Overall, I do recommend K5 Learning if you want to enhance your kid’s reading and math skills. If you want additional lessons or activities during school or summer vacation. Click here if you want to subscribe to their lessons.  I like their free worksheets which make my life easier. I download and print it so my son can answer more exercises.

We only have a few days left to enjoy the summer vacation because next Monday my son will go to school already. They’ll be having 4 days of orientation for new students so we’re indeed back to school.

Swimming Lessons

If there’s one thing that I really want to do when I was a kid is to enroll myself in summer class because I want to have productive summer and I don’t want to stay in the house waiting for the next school year. I want to enroll in swimming class, art class, cooking class, baking class and other activities that will enhance my skills but sad to say that we don’t have money in this kind of activities. The only thing that I look forward every year is the DVBS (Daily Vacation Bible School) which only lasts for a week.

Now that I’m a parent, I make sure that my son will have a productive summer and I want him to discover and develop his skills, talents and gifts. That’s why I always enroll him in summer class since he was 2 years old and now he is taking swimming lessons.

It is not a secret here that my husband and son love to swim; it is their bonding activity since Ethan was 4 months old. We’re lucky that he is not afraid of water so we just continue to expose him in the water. But of course, we wanted him to learn how to swim without floaters.

Sharing to you the photos of his swimming lessons for two days.
