Traveling to the Philippines in Times of COVID19

A lot of things happened since we arrived in the Philippines and I have still a long list of things to do but for now, let me take a break. Just like that, our three months vacation in Norway has finally come to an end. We’re officially on school summer vacation but we’re stuck at home so I guess I will just spend my vacation on throwback post. Hehehe!

Read: Traveling to Norway in Times of COVID19

A month before our flight, I felt so stressed when I learned about “One Health Pass”. We need to present a negative RT-PCR or negative antigen test before our flight. And because of this, I did not pursue my travel plans, I planned to visit Finland a week before our flight to the Philippines but I stopped planning because I’m afraid that we might catch the virus and we can’t go back to the Philippines.

“1. Passenger is able to present a negative Reverse Transcription - Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) test taken within 48 hours or a negative laboratory-based Antigen test taken within 24 hours, prior to departure from the country of origin.

2. Fully vaccinated and must have the following proofs of vaccination against COVID-19 recognized under existing IATF regulations;

A.World Health Organization International Certificates of Vaccination and Prophylaxis
B.VaxcertPH
C.National/state digital certificate of the foreign government which has accepted VaxCertPH under a reciprocal arrangement unless otherwise permitted by the IATF”

Instead of travel trips, I spent my time researching where we are going to take the swab test. It is not easy because there are limited options and we need to travel to Trondheim city just to take the test. The best option is to book a hotel and take the test at Trondheim Airport, Værnes. So several days before our flight, I reserved a room at Radisson Blu Hotel, Trondheim Airport for 3 people.

The following day, I felt sad and happy when I learned that we no longer need to take the swab test starting May 30, 2022. I was sad because I already booked the hotel room. I chose the guaranteed reservation rate to save money so I can no longer cancel. Huhuhu! But of course, I was happy because we were able to save money. The cost of an Antigen Test in Norway is not cheap, 995NOK per person so it is more or less PHP6K (including the forex fee of our credit card). #12Ksaving

“FULLY Vaccinated* International travelers bound to the Philippines are NO LONGER REQUIRED to undergo facility-based quarantine and EXEMPTED from PRESENTING Pre-departure COVID-19 Negative Test Result (RT-PCR/Antigen Test) as per IATF Resolution No. 168 (Effective May 30, 2022), ONLY if below conditions are met:

1. Fully vaccinated* Foreign/Filipino nationals with Booster shot** for 18 years old and above.
2. Foreign/Filipino minors aged 12-17 years old who are Fully vaccinated* AND accompanied by Fully vaccinated* with Boostered** parent(s) or guardian(s).
3. Foreign/Filipino minors aged BELOW 12 years old, regardless of their vaccination status, who are accompanied by Fully vaccinated* with Boostered** parent(s) or guardian(s).”

Traveling to the Philippines in Times COVID19

Since I don’t need any swab test results, I was able to register on One Health Pass, two days before our flight.

Travel by Boat

The day before our flight, off we went to Radisson Blu Hotel, Trondheim Airport, check-in time is still 3PM so we chose the 11:20AM Ferry Boat trip from Ørland to Trondheim. Travel time is more or less 1 hour, I like this trip because there are no other stopovers, straight na siya sa Trondheim seaport.

Just in time for lunch so we ate at Røft Rôtisseri, for the last five years I’ve been seeing this restaurant every time we are in Trondheim so finally na-try na rin namin. We just took our time eating since we did not book any train tickets yet.

Travel by Train

For our past travel trips, we always took the Flybussen Airport Express Bus to reach Trondheim Airport, Værnes but three years ago, my mom discovered that it is cheaper to take the train. Imagine 200NOK bus fare compared to 42NOK train fare so it is a really big saving. We bought the 14:17 ticket at the machine, Trondheim Central Station to Trondheim Airport.

My only concern in riding the train is the luggage, I am not that strong to carry 25kls luggage but God is so good because, at that time of our trip, the train has no stairs (it is not always like that).

Several years ago, I’ve learned that “Hell” is located in Norway and I was so curious that I wanted to visit this place. This place became a minor tourist attraction in Trondheim because of its name but the meaning of Hell is "overhang or cliff cave". It was just funny because Hell is supposed to be a hot place but here in Norway, temperatures in Hell can reach -25C during winter. The train did not stop there so I was not able to take a good picture of it. (todo zoom).

Radisson Blu Hotel, Trondheim Airport

The train stopped at the Trondheim Lufthavn or Airport so we just walked to the hotel just beside the airport. And because of the train delay, we’re just in time for the 3PM check-in and no more waiting since the room is already ready.

Travel by Plane

Since the airport is just a few minutes walks from the hotel, we checked out at the hotel, 3 hours before our flight. Start of our long journey.

Trondheim to Oslo 55 mins
Connection Time 2 hrs and 20 mins
Oslo to Doha 6 hrs and 30 mins
Connection time 2 hrs and 50 mins
Doha to Manila 9hrs and 25 mins

Trondheim to Oslo via SAS

The check-in counter is already open, the staff asked for our swab test results but I told him that we don’t need it anymore since we are already fully vaccinated. I gave him our vaccination cards and I showed him my One Health Pass but he did not mind it. He is more focused on our vaccination card information. After several minutes of checking, he finally gave us our boarding pass.

While waiting for our boarding, I checked my email and I already got the One Health Pass QR Code, except for my son (for manual verification). Norway no longer requires the wearing of face masks so we did not see anyone wearing a face mask at the airport. And for our first flight via SAS, kami lang ng anak ko nakaface mask.

Anyway, since we had a buffet breakfast at the hotel, we did not bother to eat lunch because we were still full. I was thinking that we have enough time to eat late lunch at Oslo Airport but I was wrong. Our first flight was delayed so we had no time to eat.

Oslo to Doha via Qatar Airways

Upon arrival at Oslo Airport, we immediately went to Immigration. When we reached the boarding gate, wearing of face mask is already required before boarding. The staff asked for our One Health Pass and Vaccine Certificate, but when she saw that my son has no booster shot, she asked for swab test results. I told her that we don’t need one but she was not convinced so she said, “Wait, I need to verify that”. Pero hindi ko na siya pinaalis, I showed her the screenshot of IATF travel advisory. After reading, she wrote, “Docs Ok” on our boarding passes.

Our second flight was delayed too, “hangry” na ko dito. Pero hindi ka naman makakain so waiting na lang talaga kami sa first meal sa airplane.

Onboard Menu

Hungarian Beef Stew with mashed potato and parsley, potato dill salad, bread, and very berry cheesecake
Selection of crisp, chocolate, and popcorn

I used the One Hour Complimentary Super Wifi to update my husband and check if my son has already QR Code. But no QR Code for him.

Doha to Manila

Even though our flight was delayed, we have enough time for our layover but we still immediately went to our boarding gate kasi ayaw ko ng tumayo. At Oslo Airport kasi ang tagal namin nakatayo dahil wala ng upuan. Baka delay na naman, mahirap na. Fortunately, our flight was on time.

Onboard Menu
Chunky Egg with chives and mayonaise sandwich
Herb Frittata with grilled chicken sausage, infused bread, seasonal fruits, and fruit yogurt

I took advantage of the One Hour Complimentary Super Wifi to check my email and update my husband. Unfortunately, my son has no QR Code talaga so I thought, wala rin use yung QR Code kung for manual verification yung anak. So hindi na ko nagmamadali sa paglabas kasi alam ko na mahaba ang pila.

NAIA Airport

As expected mahaba ang pila sa One Health Pass but I was glad because I was able to use my QR Code so no more long lines na. For my son, the staff just scan his bar code tapos enter-enter ng mga information and that’s it. Mabilis din sa Immigration kaso natagalan naman kami sa lugggage. Toink.

When we got out luggage, I just called my husband na pwede na niya kami sunduin. A month before our flight, my husband booked a room at Sheraton Manila Hotel so tapat lang ng NAIA 3. Actually, we can use the hotel complimentary airport shuttle pero mas prefer ni hubby na sunduin na lang kami para hindi na namin bitbit luggage sa room.

At last, after two days of traveling by land, sea, rail, and air, we're finally home just in time for my husband's birthday celebration.

Traveling to Norway in Times of COVID19

Norway was my last travel before COVID19 happened and it is funny because when the world started to open to leisure traveling, Norway is my destination again. For obvious reason, my mom lives in Norway and she can’t travel to the Philippines yet so kami na lang ang bibisita. My late sister and I were supposed to visit my mom last year but it didn’t happen because of the global pandemic and my sister passed away two years ago.

So planning this trip is bittersweet, happy because I can visit my mom after three years but sad because my eldest sister is no longer here. I’m also sad because my husband cannot join this trip. He is so busy with work that he could not afford to take a vacation leave.

For the last two years, I am patiently waiting for the opportunity to travel again so when my mom and youngest sister sent me the link that Norway is open to tourists already, it gave me hope that I can travel again. So last January, my mom sent me the documents that I need and I started getting our Vaccine Certificate, I searched how to get a Yellow Card, and other documents needed to process our Schengen Visa.

I also took note of the Travel Restrictions of Norway

* All travelers must present negative results from a PCR or an antigen test performed within 24 hours before departure.
* All travelers must take a COVID19 test on arrival.
* Travelers who are 16 yrs old above must complete a registration form before departure within 72 hours of their time of arrival.
* Face mask is recommended to wear at all public places.

Transit Through Doha

Passengers who are transiting through Doha, and not leaving the airport, are not required to present any test results or certifications above the requirements of their departure or destination country.

It took me a long time processing our visa compared to my previous experiences but as days go by, Norway is slowly lifting its restrictions. Hindi pa nga kami lumalabas ng bahay so we can pass the COVID19 test pero in the end, we did not take any test because all COVI19 entry requirements have been lifted for all travelers to Norway. Yes, no testing, no quarantining, no registration.

But I was still nervous before and during our flight, I just felt relieved when we already passed the Immigration in Norway. It is true that “There are no longer special requirements for entry into Norway due to the corona situation. The same rules as before the corona pandemic apply now.”

Traveling from Manila, Philippines to Trondheim, Norway

When we are planning for our Norway trip, I already knew that we will fly with Qatar Airways because we had a good experience last time. I’ve been checking the Clark-Trondheim-Clark flight but I don’t like the flight schedule because of the 8 hours layover in Doha, Qatar so a few days before our trip, I checked Manila-Trondheim-Manila flight and I finally changed my mind. The rate and flight schedule are better if we will fly from Manila.

Thank God, we don’t need to travel to Pampanga. We left early because I was thinking about the Friday traffic but we arrived in NAIA 3 after an hour. Himala, wala traffic, maybe because of the gas price increase.

Prior to our trip, I downloaded Qatar Airways App so I already knew the onboard menu and I was able to check in and choose seats before we went to the airport. I thought checking-in would be easy but I was wrong, ang dami pala pila. We fell in line for Vaccine Certificate Check, Visa Check, and lastly to drop off our bag and get our boarding pass.

And I don’t know if it is because of the COVID19 situation because this was the first time that the Immigration Officer asked for our Travel Insurance so it is really important to travel with insurance whether it is a mandatory requirement or not.

Manila to Doha 9hr and 45min
Connection time 3hr and 10min
Doha to Oslo 7hr and 10min
Connection time 3hr and 55min
Oslo to Trondheim 55 min

Aside from the usual Travel Kit, Qatar Airways also provided Protective Kit, this includes gloves, face mask, and hand sanitizing gel. There was no longer a paper menu, good thing I already have an idea of the onboard menu.

Manila to Doha Onboard Menu
Snacks - Chicken Fajita Breakfast - Choice of Yellow Curry Fried Rice with Bean Stew Tofu, Plain Congee, or Wild Raspberry Brioche with croissant, seasonal fresh fruit, and yogurt.

Doha to Oslo Onboard Menu
Brunch - Choice of Herbed Scrambled Egg with Chicken Sausage, Vegetable Ratatouille and Curry Chicken Rice with a bread roll and seasonal fresh fruit
Snacks - Chicken Fajita

Three years ago, Qatar Airways has FREE WIFI for 30 minutes but I was not able to connect. But with our recent trip, I was happy because I was able to use the COMPLIMENTARY ONE HOUR of SUPER WIFI during our flight to Doha and Oslo. And because of this, I can message my husband and my mom above the clouds. Qatar Airways has flight entertainment but I prefer watching the views outside of the plane. It is nice to see the take-off and touchdown of our plane.

Traveling to my mom’s place is no joke because I need to take 3 planes and 1 ferry boat so I was happy when I was able to book the shortest trip. But little did I know that this would be our longest travel experience, it took us 43 hours just to reach my mom’s place because of 2 delayed flights, missed connecting flight, and missed ferry boat trip.

It was indeed a tiring trip but I am still happy because finally, we are here in Norway. It feels good to be able to travel again and life here is back to normal; no face mask and no social distancing.

3 Days in Kota Kinabalu Malaysia

Just this week, out of the blue my son asked me if he has been to Malaysia already and I said yes. He doesn’t believe me at first but I told him that we’d been to Kota Kinabalu, Kuala Lumpur, and Johor Bahru Malaysia. Then he remembered the Petronas Twin Tower in Kuala Lumpur and Legoland in Johor Bahru but he can’t remember our Kota Kinabalu trip.

Some people say that it is better to travel when the kids are already old because they won’t remember it when they are still young. But for me, my son may not remember it but I have pictures, videos and stories to tell. There are so many memorable stories that I can share with him.

Read: Why Do We Travel with Kids in Tow

In fact, Malaysia is his first out-of-the-country, our first family overseas adventure, and the cheapest out-of-the-country trip we’ve experienced. Would you believe that I only paid P2000+ for our round trip fare and that is for 3 persons. Thanks to Air Asia promo!

Read: Air Asia Experience

At that time, Air Asia only flies at Clark International Airport so we traveled to Clark Pampanga and parked our car at DMIA. Then after few hours, we landed at Kota Kinabalu Airport, the airport is not that big so we were out after several minutes.

Where Did We Stay in Kota Kinabalu Malaysia?

I availed the airport pick-up service of City Park Lodge so we won’t have any problem haggling for taxi rate. I’ve read before that they don’t use taxi meter there and base on our experience, kontrata nga lagi pagsasakay, I’m not sure kung ganun pa rin.

One of the reasons why our Kota Kinabalu trip was cheap is, we did not stay in hotel. We stayed at City Park Lodge, the lodge has a good location too so we just literally walk when we went to the port, restaurant, market, and other tourist spots. They even gave us a coupon too that we can use for our island hopping, RM4 per person discount.

And because of our flight schedule, we have very limited time in Kota Kinabalu Malaysia. Sharing with you our trip.

Day 1

It was already late in the afternoon when we arrived in Kota Kinabalu so we just bought food and drinks at the nearest convenience store then we had dinner at Secret Recipe

Day 2

The following day, we woke up early so we can start exploring the city. From the lodge, we just walk to Jesselton Point Waterfront. It is where we’re going to ride the boat for our Island Hopping.

Island hopping in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park

We can visit Mamutik Island, Sapi Island, Sulug Island and Manukan Island but because we have very limited time, we just chose one island which is Manukan Island. It is 15-20 minute speedboat ride from Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal. We had a great time at the beach, this was the first time na nakapagbeach ako sa ibang bansa.

Read: Manukan Island

We only stayed for few hours on the island and we went back to Jesselton Point. From the port, we just walked to Suria Sabah Mall to eat our lunch. Most of the time we eat at KFC because it is everywhere and some stores are open 24 hours.

Monsopiad Cultural Village

Some people say that a trip to Sabah will not be complete if you will not visit Monsopiad Cultural Village, so I included this in our itinerary. Since we did not want to get lost and we want to save time, we rode a taxi even though the price is steep. RM100 taxi ride vs RM3 per bus per person.

Monsopiad Cultural Village is a historical site in Sabah so you will learn more about its history by visiting the village. Aside from that, they will show you how Kadazan people live before. If you like history, you will enjoy this tour but if not you can skip it.

Seri Selara

After our trip in Monsopiad Cultural Village, we asked the taxi driver to drop us at Seri Selara. He agreed but he asked for additional RM10. Seri Selara is an open-air seafood restaurant so don’t forget to include this in your itinerary.

This is like Dampa Restaurant here in the Philippines, where you can choose the seafood from the glass tanks and they will cook it for you. We enjoyed our food trip here, there is Filipino staff here and he gave us a discount. From the restaurant, we just walked back to City Park Lodge.

Day 3

Gaya Street Sunday Market

The following day, we woke up early to take advantage of the Gaya Street Sunday Market. From its name, it is only open every Sunday from 6:30 to 1PM. You can buy souvenirs, clothes, food and other stuff. I bought some souvenirs and pasalubong here.

DIY Kota Kinabalu City Tour

Since we are budget travelers, we did not book any tour packages so we just hired a taxi driver to tour us around for 3 hours. We visited Signal Observation Hill, Wisma Tun Mustapha (Sabah Foundation Building), Pu Toh Tze Buddhist Temple, State Museum, State Mosque, and Handicrafts/souvenir Center.

It was just a short city tour since we have to go back to our lodge to get our luggage. After check-out, we went straight to the airport so we won’t miss our flight.

Note: If you still have time, you can also visit Brunei, you need to ride a ferry boat from Kota Kinabalu to Brunei.

Summer Vacation is Over, We’re Back to the Philippines

Hello. It’s been two weeks since the last time I updated this blog. I just have no time to blog because I was busy packing and unpacking for our Iceland trip and of course, Philippines. Yes, after two months, summer in Norway is already over and we’re back in the Philippines.

It took me a while to fight my jetlag and adjust to the warm weather. Now, I’m busy preparing for the coming school year and I’m not yet so ready. Good luck to me.

Anyway, before going back to the Philippines, my husband asked me if I’m excited to go home and I said no. No, because…

1. I like the cold weather and fresh air of Norway.
2. I don’t iron clothes in Norway because we always wear a jacket. I dislike this chore. The only time that I ironed clothes was when we were going to Iceland.
3. I will miss the dishwasher of my mom. Ang dali ng buhay pag may dishwasher.
4. I will miss the food, especially salmon, cake and ice cream.
5. I will miss the nature.
6. I will miss the water, yung hindi na bibili ng mineral water because I can drink water from the faucet.
7. Going back home means vacation is really over, as in back to school na kami.
8. I was so scared of flying back home because this was the first time that my son and I would travel without hubby or companion. First na, long haul flight pa, so napaparanoid talaga ko.

But of course, I also miss my husband, it’s been 5 weeks and for the record, this is the longest time that we’ve been away from each other. He always teases me na “Malnourished” na daw siya at wala na siya tagaluto. Hehehe! Well, two weeks lang naman niya na feel na wala kami sa bahay because he was also out of the country for three consecutive weeks.

As I mentioned, I was so nervous flying back home and I really prayed hard that everything would be okay. Our flight was really tiring because we’d been traveling for 3 days.

Thursday Reykjavik Iceland to Trondheim Norway
Friday Trondheim Norway to Oslo Norway
            Oslo Norway to Bangkok Thailand.
Saturday Bangkok Thailand to Manila Philippines

We arrived from Iceland last Thursday and we went straight to Radisson Blu Hotel since we had an early flight the following day. My mom booked this hotel last April. I already blogged about this hotel because my husband stayed here too but I will share my personal experience on a separate post.

Read: Radisson Blu Hotel in Trondheim Norway

Even though the hotel was just a few steps away from the airport I was thankful that my mom accompanied us at the hotel and airport. I have two luggage and 3 hand-carry and I can’t rely on my son.

Trondheim Airport

My husband did the online check-in so we have the middle seat, as per my request. Ayaw ko kasi mag-excuse or may mag-excuse pa if we need to go to the lavatory. Check-in was easy and wala din pila sa security check. Thank God! This is one thing that I dislike in traveling, ang dami security check. Nakakapagod maglabas at magbalik ng gamit. I already instructed my son kung paano kami sa security check and make sure na mauna siya para abangan gamit namin sa dulo.

We were two hours early for our flight and I could not connect to the free wifi. I’m not sure kung dahil nagamit ko na ba siya kahapon and wala pa 24hrs. We rode SAS airplane, with no complimentary food and drinks.

Oslo Airport

My husband went home first so he was able to take photos of the landmarks that I needed to remember so going to the next boarding gate was not a problem. The Immigration Officer advised us not to enter yet and to be back 2 hours before our flight because there was nothing to see inside.

Read: Glimpse of Oslo Airport

We had 5 hours layover in Oslo, so we bought pasalubong and ate lunch at Fiskeriet Seafood. I just ordered Fish and Chips NOK169 and NOK35 for bottled Coke.

We rode Thai Airways from Oslo to Bangkok, I was happy because our flight was only 10 hours compared to our Bangkok to Oslo which is 11 hours and 30 minutes. My dilemma is I could not sleep again, waah! I really appreciate the flight entertainment and they have a list of new movies.

Bangkok Airport

Upon arrival to Bangkok Airport, ramdam ko na ang init. I was happy that we arrived early because I had enough time to transfer to our next boarding gate. But when I checked the information, “delayed” agad ang nabasa ko. So from 1 hour and 25 minutes layover to 3 hours. Security check was smooth, with no long lines.

We rode Thai Airways again.

When I heard the announcement “I do apologize, we could not land yet because of air traffic and we’re at number 11…” ramdam ko na nasa Pinas na ko. Nasa ere pa lang, traffic na. Hehehe!

Finally, we were home and I was so thankful for the smooth flight. Achievement unlock, yehey! Nakabiyahe na kami ng malayo.
