Food Trip at Borro + Kandle Cafe

My college friends have been planning for our get-together and it took us almost a year to finalize everything. Unfortunately, we were not complete pero go pa rin kasi baka mag2024 na hindi pa kami magkita-kita. I thought I can’t make it too because my husband was in Indonesia, good thing that he was able to go home before our get-together.

We’ve been eating at Tong Yang for the last two meetings so for a change, my friend suggested Borro Manila. She reserved a table, a few weeks before our scheduled reunion. It was a good decision because when we arrived, the restaurant is already crowded and there are so many people waiting to be seated. Parking is hard too so we're thankful for the valet parking.

Borro Manila

Prior to our get-together, I checked Borro Manila Facebook page so at least I have an idea of their menu but when we arrived, it took us a long time to browse the menu. A one-page menu pero ang dami din options for pasta, seafood, pork, chicken, beef, steaks, soup, salad, and others. Most of the food is good for sharing so it is perfect for family or big groups.

They served complimentary bread kahit hindi pa kami nakakaorder. We ordered Creamy Truffle Pasta PHP550, Mixed Veggies with Seafood PHP650, Lechon Kawali PHP530, Stuffed Pork Chops PHP480, Barbeque Pork Belly PH490, Boneless Fried Chicken PHP580 (2), and extra rice + Service Charge

When they served the food, we were surprised because of the big serving, especially the boneless chicken, 2 pa naman ang inorder namin. We are group of 8 adults and 4 kids, pero hirap kami ubusin yung order so take-out na lang. Among the food that we ordered, we liked the mixed veggies with seafood.

Kandle Cafe

After lunch, we went to Kandle Cafe which is just a few minutes walk from Borro. I thought they only serve coffee and pastries but they have meals din pala. But we went here for coffee so for my family, I ordered Americano PHP125, Iced Chocolate PHP165, White Mocha PHP170 and Blueberry Cheesecake PHP225. Drinks and cheesecake are good naman but feeling ko mas mahal compared sa ibang cafe na natry ko.

Birthday Celebration at The Alley by Vikings

My mom lives overseas for three decades already so she doesn’t celebrate her birthday with us. From the time that she left, the only birthday celebration that I can remember was 6 years ago because I’m the one who prepared and booked for it. But this year, she had a weeklong birthday celebration. It started in Palm Beach Resort, then she had a small celebration/Despedida in Valenzuela and of course the birthday celebration at The Alley by Vikings.

It is not easy to plan kung biglaan especially if she has so many options like staycation in Tagaytay, hotspring in Laguna, adventure in Bulacan or eat all you can na lang. We ended up with buffet because the hotel and resorts that we wanted were all fully-booked on the day of celebration. For buffet restaurants naman, ang dami din choices but we settled at The Alley by Vikings.

Read: List of Buffet Restaurants in the Philippines
Since we are a group of 13 persons, my sister-in-law reserved a table for us and The Alley sent a Confirmation Message. My sister-in-law personally went there to check the restaurant and reserve but according to the SMS, for future reservations and inquiries, you may contact the hotline at 845-4647. So no need na pumunta pa sa restaurant, you can just call and reserve.

I haven’t tried The Alley by Vikings so when I saw the buffet rate, namamahalan ako. But my sister who already ate there said “sulit naman, marami food choices”. The Alley is different from other buffet Vikings restaurants that we have tried. They offer more or less 15 international street-inspired food stalls where diners can choose, eat and drink. So parang malaking food court that you can eat unlimited food, drink unlimited juice, coffee, softdrinks, and alcoholic drinks and pay a fixed rate.

Prior to our trip, I already checked the list of food stalls that I can choose from. There are several stalls and I’m pretty sure that I cannot taste everything so from the list, I chose Just Steak A Minute, Frituen Batsoy, Yatai, Atching Lilian, Nords Coffee Bar, and Street Wok.

Fast forward to the birthday celebration, we were there before 11AM and pang #3 na kami. The Alley by Vikings restaurant is big and I like the interiors, very Instragrammable. Each corner has different designs, even tables and chairs are not uniform. They started calling the number at 11AM and then we started our feast.

We immediately went to Just Steak a Minute, you can choose from Beef Tenderloin Steak, Salisbury Steak, and Pork Tenderloin Steak. My husband and I chose the Beef Tenderloin Steak and my son chose the Salisbury Steak. I enjoyed my steak and mashed potato and I wanted to order for second round but my husband suggested, try ko naman ang ibang food stall so I did. Before we paid the bill, I went back to order Beef Tenderloin Steak but I was disappointed kasi bakit iba na lasa, hindi katulad nung una ko kinain so I was thinking, hindi ba consistent ang taste? My husband said, baka tira-tira na lang kasi patapos na e. Waah!

Next stop is Yatai for my ebi tempura and miso soup, then Frituen Batsoy for classic bagnet but you can also try Kare-Kareng Bagnet, Paksiw na Bagnet, Sisig Bagnet, Sinigang na Bagnet or Tsep’s Batchoy. From Atching Lilian, I only ate bopis. The Nords Coffee Bar offers drinks and desserts, I ate blueberry cheesecake and mango cheesecake while my son enjoyed his churros. From Street Wok stall, I enjoyed puto bumbong, taho and green mango with bagoong while my son ate fish balls. The Alley offers dirty ice cream and yung level-up na ice cream. May pakulo pa na dry ice sa gilid.

For birthday celebrants, mas okay ang pakulo nila compared sa ibang Vikings restaurants. May perfomance pa sila before giving the ice cream with a candle. My mother enjoyed her birthday celebration here. It was a treat from my mom so I have no reason to complain kasi libre naman but if I will pay for P932.40, hindi siya sulit for me. Maybe I will just go back pag weekday or birthday celebration din. Hehehe!

The food and service are good but I still prefer the other Vikings restaurants na mas gusto ko yung buffet spread. My aunt went back the following day with my other aunt's family and mukhang sulit sa pinsan ko at umupo na sa Hegz bar for alcoholic drinks. So kung umiinom kayo, baka sulit na sa inyo.

Shrimp Bucket

We went to Artist Madhouse last Sunday while my husband stayed in UP Town Center while waiting for us (my son and I). I called my husband to pick us up and we went back to UP Town Center because I have never been there.

It was time for lunch and we immediately went to Shrimp Bucket, if you remember my post before. My husband ate here and he liked the shrimp with salted egg. I tried to cook it at home and we all loved it, sabaw pa lang ulam na. I always served it if we have a get-together at home. Click here to see the recipe

We waited for several minutes because no available table yet inside, the staff already asked for our order while waiting. We ordered Shrimp P560 and chose Salty Eggsperience for the special sauce per pound. Other sauces are The Mardi Gras, Coco-SOL (South of Luzon), Frenchy Lemon Pepper, The Spaniard, and Coco-curry. My son ordered Plain Salted Chicken Wings P225 and extra rice at P40 each

The placemat is big white paper that covers the whole table, they serve the chicken wings first which is tender, juicy, and crunchy.

The Shrimp Salty Eggsperience was served in a plastic bag, I tried it and it was good but I prefer my Salted Egg Shrimp. So hindi pala ko binobola ng asawa ko na mas masarap daw yung luto ko. Lol. Ok love your own. If ever I’ll go back, I will try the other specialty sauces.

While eating, I asked my husband why other people have bib bakit kami wala, he checked the other diners and sabi niya baka by request. Ganun,? Dapat automatic na yun, I did not ask for bib anymore at patapos na rin kami kumain.

After that, I saw J.Co Donuts and wala pila so I bought a dozen of doughnut. Our favorite is Alcapone and I added Chocomaltine, Coco Loco and Jacky Chunk.
