4th World Travel Expo Experience

I’m itching to travel again so when I learned that we have two weeks semestral break, I immediately look for a place where we could spend our sembreak. Unfortunately, I was having a hard time kasi lagi na lang may problem, like hindi okay ang weather, mahal ang airfare or wala na ko makitang available resort or hotel na pasok sa budget. I don’t want to spend P10K/per night sa room because hindi naman kami magstaycation.

I want to travel but of course, I don’t want to hurt our savings so as much as possible I have to stick with our budget. Nainis din ko ng slight kasi sa school calendar namin, one-week lang semestral break so wala ko balak umalis. Then a week before sembreak, may nasagap ko na tsismis na two weeks daw ang sembreak namin dahil nasa South Korea mga school personnels. Pero last day of class na nag-inform si teacher and confirmed TWO WEEKS ANG SEMBREAK. Waah!

This is the reason, bakit Friday lang ang blog post ko last week because I was busy searching and planning for our trip. I stopped searching na lang kasi napagod na talaga ko kakahanap. I felt that I wasted my one week because wala din akong naplano and nastress lang ako. After few days, I checked kung may Travel Expo and voila, meron World Travel Expo at SMX Convention Center so napaluwas kami bigla. And the search is not yet over.

What: World Travel Expo 2019
Where: Function room 3, 4, and 5, SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia, Pasay City
When:  October 25, 26, 27, 2019, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Admission Fee: Php 80 - Adult and P50 for students, senior citizens, and PWD.

I checked the list of exhibitors and ang konti lang, wala nga ko nakita na airlines. Anyway, this is the 4th World Travel Expo so mag-improve din sila in the future.

Kahit konti lang ang nagjoin, hindi naman nasayang ang punta namin. We availed the PHP600 (from PHP1200) Japan Visa Processing, malay mo makabalik kami ng Japan. hehehe! I have 3 months to use the voucher and submit our requirements. I also bought 2 Stanley Food Jar at PHP1589 each less 25% off. Lastly, we booked 2 Palmera Suites at The Farm at San Benito (PHP8000 nett/per room). We checked other resorts and hotels pero dahil ang laki ng discount sa The Farm at San Benito kaya dito kami nagbooked. Matatanggal na rin siya sa bucket list ko. :)

Birthday Staycation at Sheraton Manila

Today is the last day of my son’s periodical exam so I have time to blog again. Hello, sembreak! Last week, I shared about Sheraton Bandung Hotel & Towers in Indonesia and this reminded me that I haven’t blogged about my Birthday Staycation at Sheraton Manila last August. We splurged on our food trip at Yurakuen Japanese Restaurant in Diamond Hotel but we saved a lot on my birthday staycation.

Birthday Staycation at Sheraton Manila Club

Would you believe that we only spent less than PHP800 for my birthday staycation at Sheraton Manila? As of this writing, this is the cheapest birthday staycation we ever had. I’m so happy that we had a weekend getaway without breaking the bank. And for the record, this is not a travel-sponsored post.

Free room
Free buffet breakfast
Free cake
Free birthday card
Free late check-out at 2PM

Travel Tip: If you love staycation or you want to get discounts for your hotel booking, do not forget to sign up for a hotel membership. The majority of the membership is free but there are times that you need to pay for your annual membership or you need to stay at their hotel before they can invite you to become a member.

Birthday Staycation at Sheraton Manila

My husband and I have hotel memberships so we get discounts or earn points for business or family trips. And because of that, we earned enough points to get a FREE ROOM STAY. My husband decided to use his points for my birthday celebration. We can stay for 2 nights but I told my husband to save the other night for my son’s birthday.

Fast forward to my celebration, we had lunch first at Dayrit’s Burger and Roast Beef House at Paseo de Magallanes. I even bought some bread and snacks so we have something to eat at the hotel. After lunch, we went straight to the Sheraton Hotel.

Check-in time is 3PM and we arrived before 1PM but they allowed us to check in already. There is a deposit fee of PHP5000 (if I remember it right). On our way to our room, my husband informed me that we have FREE BUFFET BREAKFAST too. Yey! When my husband booked a room at Sheraton, we were aware that we only have a free room and buffet breakfast is not included in the package. So we were really happy when the hotel staff offered us a complimentary breakfast at S Kitchen. I like Sheraton because they know how to value and spoil their loyal guests.

Sheraton Manila is just across NAIA Terminal 3 so if you are looking for a place to stay before your departure or after your arrival, I can recommend this hotel. They offer FREE AIRPORT SHUTTLE SERVICE to NAIA Terminal 1, 2, and 3. The bus leaves every 30, 40, or 50 minutes, depending on the airport terminal.

It reminded me of our stay in Radisson Blu Trondheim and Radisson Blu Oslo because we have an airport view from the hotel. Unfortunately, our room does not have an airport view but this is our view while waiting for the elevator.

Sheraton Manila Deluxe Room

We stayed at the Queen Deluxe Guest Room. The room is spacious about 44sqm, it has two queen beds, a working desk, a lounge chair, flat-screen TV, mini bar, safe, and refrigerator. As expected, we enjoyed the Sheraton Signature Sleep Experience, we love the bed, duvet, and pillows. My husband also requested feather pillows.

The bathroom has no bathtub but plus points because they have a bidet. They have the usual toiletries like shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, soap, lotion, toothpaste and toothbrush, and more. One thing I dislike is the sliding door in the bathroom, it is hard to open sa loob so kelangan pa namin ipabukas sa labas.

After several minutes, I was surprised when the hotel staff delivered my FREE BIRTHDAY CAKE, BIRTHDAY CARD, and Handwritten notecard from the Director of Operations. The notecard is for my husband, Sheraton hotels always give a welcome card to all their loyal guests. The cake is not just a slice but a whole cake and we love the chocolate cake. Napatimpla agad ng coffee si hubby, just in time for our merienda.

Around 3PM, we went to the heated saltwater swimming pool. The pool is big but it is crowded too so my two boys did not stay long, wala pa yata 1 hour umayaw na.

They have Kid’s Club where you can bring your kids but my son did not go there, feeling binata na. For adults, they have a spa and fitness center.

If you are feeling hungry, they have S Kitchen, Lounge, 24 hours Dining Service and soon Oori. We’re too lazy to go out so for our dinner we availed the room service. We ordered Four Cheese Pizza PHP640 and Chicken Nuggets for PPHP360 (less PWD discount).

The food doesn’t look presentable or appetizing but we loved the pizza. Usually, hindi namin type yung Four-Cheese pizza but this time, we love the combination of mozzarella, brie, parmesan, and kesong puti. Sarap na sarap kami sa pizza. They have Kids Menu so I ordered Chicken Nuggets with tomato relish, mayonnaise, and french fries. I was surprised kasi kakaiba yung nuggets nila parang homemade. My son prefers the taste of the fastfood nuggets so si hubby ang umubos ng food niya.

Buffet Breakfast at S Kitchen

We had a buffet breakfast at S Kitchen, it is an all-day dining restaurant so you can eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It offers international cuisines like Japanese, American, and Chinese but most of the foods are Filipino which is an advantage if you like Filipino foods like me. They have a bread station, salad station, egg station, fruit and drink station, and many more.

Upon arrival, the staff ushered us to our table and she left without asking for our drinks. Nasanay ko sa ibang hotel sa Pinas na automatic itatanong kung coffee or tea, I’m not sure kung self-service since they have a coffee machine. Anyway, kami na lang kumuha ng coffee and choco.

My favorite buffet station is the Paluto, imagine you can have grilled food for your breakfast. Among the choices are grilled tilapia fillet, bangus fillet, Vigan Longganisa, and Lucban Longganisa. Natuwa din ako kasi may taho at fresh buko juice din. Sad lang, naubusan ako ng champorado and ang tagal ng refill. hehehe!

Lastly, aside from early check-in, we were advised that we can check out at 2PM without additional charge. So to save money, brunch na yung kinain namin sa S Kitchen para sa labas na kami kakain ulit. Hehehe!

Overall, I enjoyed my PHP800 birthday celebration at Sheraton Manila. Sheraton's service is always very satisfactory. We're supposed to go back for my son's 11th birthday but my son doesn't like to have a staycation. Maybe next year, we will try Sheraton Manila Bay or Sheraton Mactan.

This was our first time in Sheraton Manila and you can check other branches that we have tried.

My Philippines Travel Tour Expo Experience and Tips

We all know that traveling is costly but there are ways to save money for your next travel adventures. If you love to travel, I’m pretty sure that you always look forward to "travel expos" because it is the best time to score cheap plane tickets, discounted hotel and resort packages, affordable package tours, and even travel stuff are on sale like luggage, hand-carry bags, packing cubes and many more.

Since we live outside Metro Manila we don’t normally go to travel expos unless we have upcoming travel trips. So when I learned that there will be 26TH PTAA Travel Tour Expo 2019 from February 8-10, 2019, I immediately saved the date. It's been more than three years since our last visit to the travel expo.

26TH PTAA Travel Tour Expo 2019 Experience

Fast forward to our trip, my husband and I went to SMX Convention Center and we arrived before 8AM. On the way to the parking area, I already saw the crowd outside the SMX so totoo pala na ang dami ng tao. I was a little bit worried na baka matagalan kami bago makapasok kasi late na kami nakarating. But I was wrong because we did not have a hard time, thank God for Citibank credit card and Courtesy Seating.

After we parked the car, we asked the guard where is the line for the Citibank credit card holders and then we went straight to the other side of the building. Then I saw the Citicard Courtesy Seating so we did not go out of the building anymore. Yey! To register, the staff asked for our credit cards and we filled out a form and she gave us free tickets and flyers. Then we just waited for the opening time which is 8:30AM. Only those who have tickets can enter the travel expo.

Since we’re one of the early birds, we did not have a hard time falling in line. Unfortunately, some of the booths were still closed. Hindi yata sila aware sa early bird sale. Anyway, we immediately went to our target booth and reserved a plane ticket. Since we already have specific travel plans, we only visited 5 booths; 2 airlines, 1 luggage booth, 1 travel bags booth, and 1 travel stuff booth. So we were able to book a plane ticket, bought 1 checked-in bag and 1 hand-carry bag, luggage cover, and anti-theft bag. We started at 8:30AM and we finished everything after 4 hours, we left SMX at 12:38NN.

If you are planning to visit the travel tour expo, check my travel tour expo tips.

Philippine Travel Tour Expo Experience and Tips

1. Always be prepared

Cliche as it may sound but it is very important that you are always ready and prepared. This will help you to be organized and it will also help other people. Why? I noticed some people na dun pa lang mag-iisip kung saan pupunta, magcheck sa calendar ng travel dates, and they even don’t know their travel details.

A. Have a List

Some booths may ask for passport information, the birthday of the children, or any details that they need in order to book your ticket or package tour. So be prepared, list down your possible travel dates and travel details.

B. Research

Travel Expo always announced its event weeks before so you have enough time to save the date, plan your future trip, check the list of exhibitors, and research for rates or prices. I did this before going to the travel expo.

I checked the list of exhibitors, kung nandun ba yung airlines, hotels, resorts or stores na interested ako. Then I did a mock booking online to check the airfare if ever I will buy online so at least I have an idea if mura ba talaga sa travel expo or not.

C. Bring Eco Bag

Sa dami ng flyers and freebies, you need an extra bag para di ka na mahirapan maghawak.

2. Come early

As the quote says “The early bird catches the worm”, it is important to be early so you can get the first dibs and you can avoid long lines. And if you are lucky, you can also take advantage of courtesy seating for pregnant, senior citizens, or PWD or if there is a promo or Early Bird Sale from partner companies. I took advantage of this using the Citi Credit Card and Courtesy Seating so I have one hour to check the booths bago pa dumami tao.

3. Plan your route

At PTAA Travel Tour Expo 2019, there were 994 booths from over 400 travel tours, airline companies, government offices, embassies, and even travel related. You will feel overwhelmed sa dami ng pagpipilian. But everything will be easy if you know your travel plans so while waiting for the opening or before starting your booth hopping, check the map so you know where to go first. Take note two floors yan, so mark those booths na plan niyo puntahan.

4. Notebook and Pen

Don’t forget to bring a notebook and a pen. You will fill out a lot of forms or you will take down a lot of notes. Not all airlines will print out your reservation. Qatar Airways gave us a print-out booking reference but Emirates, just gave us a quotation and sinulat na lang namin. After visiting different booths, compare your notes and check who has a better deal, then go back to that booth and buy.

5. Don’t go alone

Since you will spend most of your time falling in line, it is better to have a buddy, a friend, or family so just in case you need to go to the restroom or you want to check other deals, may isa na nakapila at may isang naghahanap.

You can also go separate ways, your partner will visit these booths and you will visit these booths then you can compare notes after. You can save time by doing this. Other booths give out numbers so no need to stay in the booth for so long, just go back to the booth and check kung malapit na turn mo.

6. Check freebies

One thing I like about the travel expo is the freebies. Yes, aside from the sale, promo, or discounts, you can also get some stuff by simply visiting their booth, liking their social media page, sharing their booth on your social media, taking photos, or purchasing at their booth.

7. Look or ask for special deals

Be observant. Yes, make use of your time. Kaysa mainip ka sa kakahintay, observe other people. You will get some ideas sa kaka-observe mo lang. Lalo na yung mga freebies na bitbit nila or yung mga nabili nila. After buying our plane tickets, pauwi na sana kami kaso ang dami ko nakikita na may luggage na bitbit so hinanap namin and we were able to score affordable Samsonite Luggage and Pacsafe bags. There are more brands there na mas mura pa sa nabili namin like American Tourister, it just depends on your preferences.

Samsonite Handcarry Luggage
Original Price PHP15,550
Discounted Price PHP5970
Savings: PHP9870

Samsonite Luggage (Large/30kls)
Original Price P19250
Discounted Price P10,587.50
Savings: P8662.50

Pacsafe Crossbody Bag
Original Price: P4490
Discounted Price: P2000
+ 10% promo when I registered (less P200)
Savings: P2690

If you will ask me worth it ba pumila or pumunta sa travel expo?

My answer is yes, travel expo is like a one-stop shop so hindi ka na mahihirapan pa na maghanap ng mga package tours, discounted tickets and sale. You will feel safe din because you are dealing with authorized agents or staff so for sure hindi scam ang mabobook. Just bring a lot of patience and make sure you wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

But when it comes to airfare, I noticed konti lang naman difference nila if you will book online because the rate still depends on your travel dates. In our experience, konti lang difference nung sale nila dun sa nakita ko online before the travel expo but we still booked it because we can pay in Philippine Peso currency, big savings yun kasi ang laki ng foreign exchange currency fee sa credit card namin. If I book online, most of the time USD lagi pag international destination.

Lunch at La Fiesta: A Taste of Filipino

This year, our family has been eating a lot of buffet meals so it is really hard to stick with our diet. We had a lot of family celebrations, family outings and travel trips so buffet meals is part of it. I won’t deny that I gained a lot of pounds this summer so I hope back to regular programming na when classes resume.

Last weekend, we had lunch at La Fiesta at SM by the Bay. My aunt-in-law was back in the Philippines for a short vacation, that is the reason why we had a spontaneous family outing at Woodside Farm and Waterpark. Last Saturday, we picked them up so we can drop them at the airport but we’re too early for the check-in time so my husband decided to kill our time at MOA.

The best way to kill our time is to eat. We don’t have reservation so I checked three buffet restaurant and we ended up at La Fiesta. Pangalawa kasi ko sa waiting list so mas malapit na. The staff advised me that buffet spread is up to 2PM only and we agreed. After several minutes of waiting, the staff ushered us to our table and it was 1:15PM already so we only have 45 minutes to get our food. This was my first time na late kami buffet, lagi kami early bird so we can take our time and we can enjoy the buffet.

Read: Dinner at La Fiesta: A Taste of Filipino

Well, it’s been four years since the last time we dined here at La Fiesta. There are few changes na rin, I saw Japanese station so they are serving other cuisines na rin and the buffet spread are not limited to Filipino Cuisine. Since I only have limited time, I only took few photos and hindi na food kasi marami na bawas yung serving plate. Hehehe!

I was happy that there is Lechon de Leche, kahit ulo part na lang naabutan ko. This is our favorite in their buffet spread and we’re glad na same pa rin ng taste. So sad lang kasi wala papaitan, sisig and laing during our visit. Wala na rin si Manong Sorbetero for dirty ice cream.

They still have acoustic band and local folk dances so timing rin for our balikbayan visitor. We took advantage the birthday promo (3+1) since it is also my husband’s birthday month. I don’t know if nasulit namin yung buffet rate since we only have limited time but it was a good experience for my AIL’s family.

Anniversary Staycation at Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila

Our family loves staycation so I have a list of hotels and resorts that we wanted to try and Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila is one of them. I’ve been meaning to stay in this hotel but every time I booked, the only available room is Club Room or Sofitel Suite. Waah! Pangmayaman naman!

As early as January, I was looking for a hotel or resort where we could celebrate our wedding anniversary. I saw the Magnifique Getaway Promo on their Facebook Page so I immediately inquired about their rates. Unfortunately, the cheapest room is no longer available so I settled for the next available room which is Luxury Room.

I’ve booked everything within 24 hours, ganun kabilis sila sumagot sa inquiry even through emails. There is nothing special with the promo because the only inclusion is the Breakfast Buffet for 2 adults and 2 children (11 years old – below) at Spiral Restaurant for Superior and Luxury Rooms. But I’m okay with it, at least my son is included in the complimentary buffet breakfast.

Fast forward to our staycation, when we checked in, the room was not available yet so we were advised that they would just call us, once it was ready. It was 10:45AM so we understand that the standard check-in time is 2PM. I paid my reservation in full + I gave P3000 for an incidental deposit. We left our luggage at the concierge, so we didn’t have to bring it anymore.

I asked for a flyer so I would have an idea of the activities for adults and kids but they don’t have any. We just went straight to the Kids Villa so we could check the different activities for the kids. They have Free activities and Paid activities. The Kids Villa is open from 9AM to 9PM

Free Activities: coloring, photo frame, bambike, badminton, kite flying, soccer
Paid Activities: cookie making, color buddy, coin bank painting, nail art, necklace

Kids Villa Rate

1st hour – free for in-house guests (1 child) and P100 for walk-in guest
Succeeding hour P100 for in-house guests and P150 for walk-in guest
Guardian fee per hour P50 for in-house guests and P100 for walk-in guest

My son tried the coloring activity and color buddy for P200. While he was inside the tent, my husband and I stayed at the playground. We were waiting for the call but we did not receive so we decided to take our lunch first.

When we came back, we just waited in the lobby. We’ve been waiting for so long but patience is a virtue. When I saw the other guests going to their room, I told my husband to ask the receptionist if our room was ready since we had not received any call.  Twenty minutes before 2PM, my husband went back to the reception, only to find out that our room was already ready at 11AM. We were informed that they called us, but no one answered. Waah!

I was just holding my phone and I did not receive any calls and I did not see any missed calls. I don’t know if there is a glitch or what but I would appreciate if they would send a text message if they were not able to reach me so that at least I know that the room is ready. Almost 3 hours din kami naghintay, ready na pala yung room. Next time, I will leave two phone numbers.

Anyway, they gave us the keycard and we went to the concierge but we were advised that they would just deliver our stuff, they just asked for our room number. And off we went to our room. I’ve read some reviews and blogs about Sofitel and I was not impressed with the rooms so I was surprised when we entered the room. The room is beautiful. Watch the video here

Luxury Room

It measures 42 square meters so we have enough space. We have private balconies with bay and city views. There is a work desk, couch, TV, Mini-Bar, Coffee/Tea making facilities, In-room safe, and free wi-fi.

I like the bed, pillows, duvet, and sheets and to be honest, this is the most comfortable bed that I’ve experienced. Parang ayaw ko na nga umalis, gusto ko na lang matulog. So this is their Sofitel’s signature Mybed TM. I asked my husband, if ganito rin ba yung bed sa Hotel Mulia but he said, medyo pareho pero mas malambot pa rin daw sa Hotel Mulia Senayan in Jakarta Indonesia.

Bathroom

The bathroom is clean, it has a rain shower and bathtub. Yey! +1 for the bathtub. They provided basic toiletries like dental kit, shampoo, conditioner, bath gel, soap, and lotion. Look at the brand of their toiletries, “Les Notes De Lanvin”. Ang sosyal di ba, from Paris, France pa. Ang bango talaga so I took it home.

I love the bath towels, face towels, and bathrobe, it is white, clean, soft, and smells fresh. Mukhang bago and I was thinking my thread count din kaya sa mga ganito. Hehehe! This is the reason why I was so disappointed with Pico Sands Hotel’s towel, kasi ang mahal ng room rate pero ang luma ng towels.

Swimming Pool

When our luggage was delivered, my son immediately changed his clothes so he could swim. My son was so excited because he saw the wet play area of Sofitel Manila. This is one thing that he missed at EDSA Shangri-la Hotel, meron din pala sa Sofitel. So if you have kids in tow, add this to your hotel options.

Sofitel Philippine Plaza is indeed a hotel and resort. You won’t feel that you are in the city because of the ambiance. The pool looks like a resort, they have a lot of trees, and you have Manila Bay view.

Once you enter the pool, you are going to sign a form, and they will give you a wrist tag and towels. There are life vests available for kids and adults that you can borrow. Lifeguards are everywhere. They are very strict when it comes to food and drinks, they really check your bag. They have a water dispenser in the pool area just in case you are thirsty. A restaurant is also available, that is the reason why you are not allowed to bring food and drinks.

It was a long weekend so the pool was crowded but my son did not mind, he spent his time in the wet play area. Swim and slide, repeat for the nth. I saw that there are Aqua Zumba and free movie nights at the pool. I hope there is a flyer or note about the different activities that we can join kasi sayang talaga. If we did not go to the pool, hindi naman malalaman na may ganung activity. Konti lang tuloy nagjojoin.

Moving on, we learned that it was the first day of the 9th Philippine International Pyromusical Competition so we decided to eat our dinner at the pool so we could have a glimpse of it. There was a buffet dinner at the bay too and we were able to watch their show for free. Hehehe!

Nainip na ko kakahintay sa fireworks so I went back to our room, I was surprised when I saw the flower and personal card on top of the bed. It was our wedding anniversary and thanks Sofitel for the surprise.

Just in time, I heard the fireworks so I rushed to the balcony to take pictures and videos. It was my first time watching the pyro-musical competition and I’m lucky that we could watch it in our room. In addition, I did not pay an entrance fee. Watch the video here.

Spiral Restaurant

The following day, the diet is off because we’re going to have a buffet breakfast at Spiral Restaurant. I already blogged about this, so read my Spiral buffet experience here. After our hearty breakfast, we went back to the pool to kill time before check-out.

We had a wonderful time at Sofitel Manila. We like the room, amenities, and facilities. We enjoyed the food at Spiral too. Service is good and staff are always smiling and willing to help if we need anything. My son was delighted in their wet play area. It was our wedding anniversary and we received a card and flowers. The rate is not cheap but it is worth the splurge.
