Hiking Adventure at Synnørsfjellet Mountain

Time flies and our summer vacation is about to end at parang hindi ko siya naramdaman because I spent most of my days at home. I’m back to my routine life so I’m kinda missing our nature tripping when we were in Norway so let me share a throwback post.

For the past five years, my mom was persuading me to climb Synnørsfjellet but my answer is always NO because I’m not really into hiking. Having a sedentary life, I know that my body will ache after hiking so bakit ko pa papahirapan sarili ko. I still can’t forget our "Angel of Peace" experience.

But two months ago, I finally gave in and we climbed Synnørsfjellet. It just so happened that my youngest sister was home for a visit and wanted to climb the small mountain. So my mom, my son, my sister, and I traveled to Garten for a hiking adventure.

There is a car park near Gartbrua where you can leave your car. I mentioned in my “Trip to Garten” post that there are two ways to climb Synnørsfjellet, of course, I chose the easiest route. You can see the guide map at the parking lot too.

Sharing some photos so you will get an idea of how child-friendly it is. My son and youngest sister reached the top without problem but my mom and I need to stop to catch our breath and recharge our energy. Lol When you reach the top, there is also a logbook where you can write your names (if you want).

The weather was not good for the past few days so I’m happy that we were able to climb even though it was cloudy and windy. I am afraid of heights but still, I appreciate the great view. The mountain is only 74 meters above sea level but you can see Ørland landscapes, Garten, Storfosna, and Trondheimsfjord

“The best view comes after the hardest climb”

Trivia: Synnørsfjellet has been part of World War I, it became a signal station for Agdenes fortress. This summit was occupied by Germans during World War II so when you climb the mountain, you can see traces of military activity.

Trip to Garten Norway

Garten is an island in the municipality of Ørland, Norway. This island is situated on the north side of the mouth of Trondheim Fjord. A long time ago, you need to ride a boat to reach the mainland but starting year 1948 it is connected by a small bridge.

Garten is where you can ride a ferry if you want to reach nearby islands like Storfosna and Leksa.

If you are into adventures like hiking, visit Garten because this place has steep hills where you can see the beautiful Ørland tidal landscapes and Trondheimsfjord from different viewpoints. On the north-eastern part of this island, you will see the Synnørsfjellet or Synnors Mountain. My mom wanted to visit this mountain but hiking is no longer part of my vocabulary so hanggang ngayon hindi ko pa naakyat yan.

You can hike Synnors Mountain using two routes, one with stairs and one route following the beach. Actually, there is a walking path map in the parking lot. My mom parked here even though we are not going to hike because she wanted to walk from the parking lot to reach the Grillhytta or Barbecue Hut in Garten.

I have sedentary lifestyle for almost two years so I am not used to long walks again. So on our way to the Barbecue Hut, I’ve said “Bakit ang layo ng pinaparkan kung puwede naman na magdrive hanggang doon?” My mom said “walking nga para maexercise” but God sent me an angel because out of the blue, may dumaan na sasakyan and we were surprised that it was my aunt’s car so hindi na kami naglakad, pinagdrive na niya kami papunta sa grillhytta and pabalik sa parking lot. Hehehe!

Three years ago, we are looking for this place pero hindi namin makita kung saan so umuwi na lang kami. But since my mom used to work in Nursing Home so this place is one of those places that they visited so it already looks familiar because I saw the pictures before. But of course, iba pa rin sa personal.

One thing I like about Norway, is there are so many places like this that you can visit for free. Yes, this cottage or barbecue hut is free to use. It was built on a voluntary basis in the year 2017. It is funded through a social development project.

Update: May 2022

Synnørsfjellet

When we arrived here in Norway last March, my mom wanted to hike Synnørsfjellet but like I've said before, I'm not into hiking. After two months, I finally gave in and we conquered the Synnørsfjellet despite the windy weather. I will blog this in a separate post so you will have an idea of how child-friendly the trail is. This is the view from the top of the mountain. :)

Svartholberget Norway

Our Day 26 in Norway is quite busy, we spent our day in Nursing Home where we played Bingo but unfortunately we did not win that day. My son also played bowling with the grannies and grandads. After my mom’s work, off we went to Europris and Coop because my mom will buy prizes for Bingo and for their event.

When we went home, my mom took a nap while I was busy editing photos and videos. At that time, my mom was preparing for an event and I volunteered that I will make her presentation. Though I’m no expert in editing photos or videos, I can make a simple video so grandparents can reminisce about their past indoor and outdoor activities in Nursing Home.

After a few hours, off we went to my aunt’s house for a quick visit. We stayed on the balcony, it was sunny but still cold so we were still wearing jackets. My aunt has a nice view of the sea too, in fact, nakakita pa ko ng cruise ship na nagdadaan dun during our last visit.

We ate dinner and then my aunt invited us for a walk. If my mom has Bruholmen, my aunt has Svartholberget for their recreation in Garten. Norwegians are lucky because they always have a recreation area near their homes. They can do biking, fishing, walking, and even a picnic for free.

It was already night time but Norway is known as the Land of the Midnight Sun so the sun is still visible at night. It was Spring season, the sun sets so late, so mga 10PM na dumidilim. During our walk, I saw the moon and the sun at the same time. Amazing!

Though it was tiring, we enjoyed our walk. Sayang lang, we did not see any moose. My aunt said, minsan makakasabay mo pa daw sila maglakad. Hehehe! There is no moose but we saw a slug.
