2 Days Trip in Camiguin

My son will be celebrating his birthday soon and I remembered our trip in Camiguin. We decided not to have a birthday party since we are not fond of a big party and off we went to Camiguin to celebrate my son’s second birthday. This was our first family trip via plane and my son’s first plane and boat experience.

We were supposed to go to Boracay but we did not like the available flights so we decided to go to Cagayan De Oro and Camiguin instead. There’s no regret because we enjoyed our CDO and Camiguin trip. We booked a CDO flight and rode a ferry boat to Camiguin Island.

At that time, I thought we needed to reschedule our trip because my hubby would be in Shanghai, China, fortunately, he was able to go home the day before our flight. Thank God that we were able to make the trip. Our 5AM flight was moved to 6:05AM because of PAL issue, I was a bit worried because we needed to catch up on our 8:30AM boat trip to Camiguin. Our plane touchdown is 7:45AM, so it is like an Amazing Race game just to reach the port. We took a cab and haggled for a P300 and not a P350 trip.

There was a bit of traffic so I really prayed hard that we could make it because I do not want the second option. We are so happy that we made it on time. We rode, Para Sea Cat Ferry but I’m not sure if they are still operating. It is a two-hour travel time before we reach Camiguin Island.

Rates (2011):
Deck Php. 400.00
View Deck Php. 400.00
Business Class Php. 600.00

Alternate route (2011):   Go to Agora Market, P350 asking price of a taxi driver. Travel time is 30-45 mins. In Agora market, ride a bus bound for Butuan City. (Rural Transit-Yellow buses) going to Balingoan (pronounced as balingwan) port (P130) Travel time is 1hr 45mins - 2hrs. In Balingoan bus terminal, walk or ride a multi-tricycle (P7) to the port proper. (multi-tricycle can carry up to 7pax); port is 100meters away. In Balingoan port,  take the ferry going to Benoni wharf (P135). Travel time is around 1hr 20mins.

Where to stay in Camiguin:

We stayed in Secret Cove Resort, which is fifteen minutes away from Camiguin White Island. If you are going to Camiguin, finding accommodation is not difficult because there are a lot of guesthouses. The tough part is choosing where you will stay.

I booked our accommodation one month before the trip. Reserving an accommodation is not difficult, I just emailed them and that’s it. No reservation fee.   I chose Secret Cove Resort because

1. Affordable price.
2. Proximity to White Island.
3. Food. I’ve read so many good reviews and they did not fail my expectations. The food is yummy, they have big servings and the price is very reasonable.

During our trip, I was surprised that there were so many tourists in Camiguin maybe because of the approaching Lanzones Festival. I was glad that I booked a tour guide a month before our trip so we had no problem exploring Camiguin Island. Our tour guide also suggested the boatman for our White Island trip.

We only had two days in Camiguin and here are the places that we visited.

Day 1 Camiguin Tour

We did not waste our time, we just took our lunch, and off we went for our tour. We visited Tres Marias Volcano, Walkway to the Old Volcano, Ruins of Gui-ob church, Sunken Cemetery, Sto Nino Cold Spring, Soda Swimming Pool and Ardent Hot Spring.

Day 2 Camiguin White Island

Your trip won’t be complete without visiting the Camiguin White Island. As early as 5:30 we’re on our way to the island. It is a 15-20 minute boat ride from the resort. There is no shade or trees on the island so we did not stay that long at baka masunog kami.

Camiguin Tour  Part 2

After our breakfast, we checked out already and we continued our Camiguin Tour. We visited Katibawasan falls, Camiguin Animal Breeding Center & Ostrich Production Center, Giant Clam Culture.

J&A Fish Pen

After our half-day tour, we ate at J&A Fishpen. Do not leave Camiguin without trying this restaurant. The restaurant has their own fish pond where you will choose your seafood and they will cook it according to your preference.

Pasalubong

For pasalubong, don’t forget to buy lanzones or pastel. When we went there, it was “Lanzones Festival” month so we bought lanzones and boxes of yummy pastel.

Have you been to Camiguin?

Amazing Waterfalls in the Philippines

I do believe that the Philippines has so many waterfalls but I just can’t find the exact number of them or maybe because some are still waiting to be discovered. As I mentioned, there are several waterfalls in the country but so far, I have just visited 7 waterfalls.

One thing that I don’t like about visiting waterfalls is the trekking part. Most of the waterfalls that I wanted to visit is I have to trek for several minutes just to get there. But of course, seeing the beauty of the waterfalls is worth the walk.

Swimming in waterfalls is good especially during summer because you will really enjoy the cold water. Sharing with you the waterfalls that I’ve visited, I don’t have pictures of some waterfalls because I don’t have my own camera during that time. Hehehe!

1. Daranak Falls - it is the first falls that I’ve visited. We had a church excursion which our family joined. Some people say that Daranak Falls is where the “Starzan” movie was filmed. It is a popular tourist spot in Tanay, Rizal and it is one of the nearest waterfalls in the metro.

2. Kawasan Falls - this falls is located in Badian, Cebu, the first falls that I’ve visited in Visayas. I spent one week in Cebu with my church friends. It was my first domestic travel via plane. Kawasan Falls is one of the tourist spots that we visited and since it is far from the city, we had an overnight trip.

3. Three Falls - when I was in third year college, I became a member of Haribon-UST now Earth-UST. One of the activities of the organization is a clean-up drive in different places. Three falls is located in Sta Maria, Laguna, and the first out-of-town activity that I joined in an organization.

That's my husband, this picture was published in the newspaper too.
Napabili tuloy ako ng newspaper. lol

4. Mt Pico de Loro Waterfalls - this is also one of the activities of our organization. We’re supposed to climb Mt. Pico de Loro but we were not able to push through because when we’re having lunch at the waterfalls, rain began to pour, biglang taas ang tubig at nagmadali kami makaalis. It better to be safe than sorry. But my ex-boyfriend now husband was able to reach the summit during their trip. It is located in Maragondon, Cavite

5. Katibawasan Falls -  it is the first falls that I’ve visited in Mindanao. It is situated in Mambajao, Camiguin. It is 250 feet high and the tallest waterfalls that I’ve visited so far. Sa sobrang taas niya, putol ang kuha ko lagi. We did not swim here because we’re on our way to Cagayan de Oro.

6. Taytay Falls -  it is located in Majayjay, Laguna which is also known as Majayjay Falls or Imelda Falls. We did not stay long during our trip because the place was crowded and my son couldn't take the cold water.

7. Pinlac Falls - when we stayed at Gina’s Garden and Farm, one of the nearest tourist spots is Pinlac Falls which located in Infanta, Quezon. It was more or less 15 minutes drive from the garden so we paid a visit. The entrance fee is PHP30, there are tables and chairs where you can stay at. There are falls for kids and adults.

Care to share your waterfalls trip.

Lanzones Festival in Camiguin

Last October 2010, we went to Camiguin to celebrate my son’s second birthday. We have no idea that Camiguin has Lanzones Festival and they celebrate it every third week of October. Too bad that we were not able to witness the celebration but still we are happy to taste Camiguin’s lanzones.

Read: 2 Days Trip in Camiguin

Do you know that Camiguin produces the sweetest lanzones in the Philippines and you can buy them for P25 -P30 per kilo and sometimes as low as P20. You can see this fruit anywhere in Camiguin and we always have them wherever we go. Don’t be surprised if you see lanzones in airport’s conveyor because most of the tourists buy lanzones in boxes. This serves as their pasalubong aside from pastel.

Festival is very famous in the Philippines, every place has their own festival. It is their own way of thanking God for giving them a bountiful harvest. Expect that this is a long week celebration, full of activities such as parades, street dancing competitions, cultural shows, beauty pageants, trade fairs, and more parties.

There is no doubt that there are so many tourists who visit the Philippines festivals but I have never attended any festival in the province and given the chance, I would love to go back to Camiguin to join and experience their Lanzones Festival. I do not want to miss the celebration and I want to enjoy their sweetest lanzones and famous pastel once again.

Well, it is not only the festival that I’m looking forward to Camiguin but I want to go back there and have my relaxation and rewind. Camiguin is a small place but there are so many tourist attractions that you should not miss. You can visit beach, waterfalls, cold spring, hot spring and many more.

Yummy Vjandep Pastel

I received this yummy pastel last night from my friend that just came from Camiguin. It is a sort of reward from convincing one of our guy friends not to cancel his Camiguin trip last Saturday. My guy friend does not want to continue the trip because of typhoon Falcon because he has two kids in tow but I was able to persuade him so I have now my favorite pastel from Camiguin.

Vjandep Pastel is the famous pastel and pasalubong in Camiguin so do not leave Camiguin without buying this. It is just a small bun with a filling, you can choose from cheese, langka, macapuno, mango, pineapple, ube and yema. I never tried other flavors because I am satisfied with yema flavor.

Vjandep Pastel is also available in CDO but of course, the price is no longer the same but the increase is just minimal. The last time we went to Camiguin, I bought a few boxes of this and before going home, we dropped by SM CDO just to buy more boxes for pasalubong.

My husband knows that I love pastel so whenever he sees pastel at the airport, he will buy me one box. Just one box if he is not in CDO airport because it is really expensive. The last time he went to Cebu, he bought me one box and it cost him P250. But it is more or less P140 in Camiguin or CDO.

Update February 2018

My husband went to Davao last week and I asked him to buy Pastel if ever he saw one in the airport. So he bought one box (6pcs). When I tried it, parang may nagbago na taste ng tinapay and filling. For me, it is not the same anymore or masyado naovercook lang, look at the photo.

Lunch at J&A Fishpen

J&A Fishpen is a very popular restaurant in Camiguin so do not leave the island without trying this restaurant.  All kinds of seafood are fresh because they have their own fish ponds where you can choose your own fish, shells, or other seafood and cook it the way you want it.

If you’re not fond of seafood, don’t worry because there are non-seafood dishes too. The price is really affordable. No food pictures because we were really hungry after our tour. We ordered grilled bangus, grilled liempo and steamed halaan.
It is very near Benoni Port so you can drop by upon arrival or before departure. This was our last stop before we left Camiguin.

Day 2: Camiguin Tour

After White Island, we went back to Secret Cove Resort to eat our breakfast and pack our things.  We need to check out early for our last leg of tour.

Itinerary for the day: Buy pasalubong, the famous pastel of Mambajao, Camiguin, Katibawasan falls, Camiguin Animal Breeding Center & Ostrich Production Center, Giant Clam Culture and Lunch at J&A Fish Pen Restaurant. We no longer include Mantigue Island since we already went to White Island.

We were not able to buy pastel in their branch because it is not yet available so we proceeded with our tour and will just buy in the port.  Anyway, you can buy pastel almost everywhere; the only difference is the price.

Second stop was Katibawasan Falls, it was the tallest falls that I’ve ever seen so far. Since we’re going back to CDO after the tour we did not swim. We just took some pictures and went straight to Camiguin Animal Breeding Center & Ostrich Production Center.

We were not able to experience snorkeling in Giant Clam Culture because the waves are too high; I am not a good swimmer so I do not want to take risk.

But there are clams in the center so you will be able to see the different clams that are available in the Philippines. There are kids who assist and educate us about clams. They are all good and friendly. I am so happy that there are still kids who are passionate in conserving our environment.

Read: UPMSI Bolinao Marine Laboratory - the clams that we've seen here came from this laboratory.

Entrance fees:

Katibawasan Falls (P15 – adult P6 -children)
Mantigue Island (P550/boat P20-entrance fee P50 – snorkeling fee)
Camiguin Animal Breeding Center & Ostrich Production Center
Giant Clam Culture (P25 per pax, P150 tour guide)

Last stop is J&A Fishpen.

Camiguin White Island

When you say Camiguin, you will always think about White Island because of its famous sandbar. It is only 2 kilometers away from Mambajao so you can see it from your resort. It is best to go there either early morning or late afternoon. The shape of sandbar may vary depending on the tides, sometimes it is letter C and sometimes it is letter I.

We decided to go there early morning so we waited outside the resort shore as early as 5:30AM where the boat will fetch us. Travel time from Secret Cove resort is 15-20 minutes depending on the waves. P450 is the roundtrip transfer of the boat, you have the option to stay long and the boat will just pick you up. We stayed till 7AM. Entrance fee of P20 per pax.

There is nothing you can see in White Island, there is no cottage, no trees, no shades and no comfort room. It is just a sandbar where you can see the Mt. Hibok Hibok and Mt. Old Volcano

The water is not too cold so you can swim and snorkel. I love the place because it is so peaceful. It is a perfect place if you want to unwind and relax. The island is really beautiful and every angle is picture-perfect.

Day 1: Camiguin Tour

We did not want to waste our time so after lunch we started our tour. Itinerary for the day: Tres Marias Volcano, Walkway to the Old Volcano, Ruins of Gui-ob church, Sunken Cemetery, Sto Nino Cold Spring, Soda Swimming Pool, and Ardent Hot Spring.

You will see the Tres Marias volcano on your way to the Ruins. We just took some pictures and we went straight to Walkway to the old Volcano.

Since we have kids in tow we did not dare to climb the stairs and we proceeded to Sunken Cemetery.  If you want to go to the cross you can ride a boat, P100 per person but we’re not interested anymore because of the strong wind.

Next stop is the Ruins of Gui-ob church.

There’s one guy who volunteered to take our pictures, pang Facebook daw ang mga shots niya and siya pa talaga nagsabi kung san kami tatayo.  Ok naman pictures namin.

They say that this huge tree is more or less 100-yr old.

On our way to Soda Swimming Pool, we saw lansonez tree, we stopped by and took some pictures. It was my first time seeing lansonez tree. I don’t know why this is called a soda swimming pool and I did not taste the water just to prove that it is soda water. But the water is so cold.

We only stayed for a few minutes and we went to Sto. Nino Cold Spring and as expected the water is too cold so hubby and son did not enjoy it.

So we moved to our last destination which is Ardent Hot Spring. Finally, we enjoyed the water and felt relaxed after our amazing race tour. But we did not stay till evening because there were so many insects.
